Growing: ROLE, IMPACT, INFLUENCE

Clubs expanded their vision during IHRSA’s 8th Annual Summit for a Healthier America

By Lilly Prince and Tom Richards

THE 8TH ANNUAL IHRSA SUMMIT for a Healthier America, held in May in Washington, D.C., was all about new ideas. Specifically intended to be the most thought-provoking Summit to date, it more than achieved its objective. Participants, fitness professionals with different backgrounds and job titles, put their heads together to expand their clubs’ presence and grow their business by promoting healthy lifestyles and playing a larger role in the nation’s effort to combat obesity. In the months since the passage of new healthcare legislation, many

Washington leaders have turned their attention from reform to prevention, as concerns about rising rates of obesity have become more acute, and proposals to address the problem have gained greater traction. Dem- ocrats and Republicans, alike—most notably, First Lady Michelle Obama, who’s spearheading the White House’s “Let’s Move” campaign against childhood obesity—have called for a national strategy to combat obesity and physical inactivity. Also, for the first time in the country’s history, Congress has introduced comprehensive obesity legislation, the Healthy Choices Act, which is sponsored by Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI), a strong ally of IHRSA. The two-day Summit began with a series of engag-

ing panel discussions, featuring industry leaders, that focused on identifying opportunities that, while targeting obesity, would also strengthen the industry and individual clubs. >
