It’s Best in Beautiful Barcelona
This month, October 18-21, IHRSA will host its 10th Annual European Congress in beautiful Barcelona, Spain. More than 400 executives, club operators, and industry suppliers will take a break from their daily routines to refresh and renew their professional spirits. Will I see you there?
I, for my part, love this event. It will be my third time attending. The small size and intimate, relaxed atmosphere of this gathering is incredibly conducive to learning; sharing best-practices with our European colleagues; meeting one-on-one with the Congress’ sup- pliers; and touring local clubs. In many ways, it reminds me of the early years of IHRSA, when the industry was young, and the association’s annual convention and trade show was a more modest affair. Those, in their way, were very good years, and the Congress
recaptures much of their glory. Though the attendees come from some 25 countries on the continent and beyond, and though we speak a number of different languages, we under- stand one another well because of our singular orientation: we share a common passion for helping people enjoy a healthy
lifestyle that includes regular physical activity. We all want to “move” and “improve” the world. The educational sessions at the Congress are outstanding, and offered in
a variety of formats—lectures, panel presentations, and roundtable discus- sions—that are designed to provide food for thought and intriguing ideas to debate. This year, the four keynote addresses will be delivered by: Dr. Mario Puig, a surgeon who promotes “exercise as medicine” (sponsored by Tech- nogym); Christian Majgaard, the former LEGO-brand leader, speaking on fostering innovation; Nick Burrows, the managing director of Nuffield Health-Fitness and Wellbeing, on energizing staff; and Bill McBride, the CEO of Club One, Inc., on sales and service excellence. Ray Algar, the managing director of Oxygen Consulting, will share
compelling new research on budget clubs, and industry veteran Phillip Mills will discuss his provocative white paper on the Future of Fitness. I’ll have the privilege of moderating a panel of some of the European industry’s brightest, most accomplished, and most forward-thinking CEOs. The Congress also offers a variety of convenient and pleasant ways
to interact with suppliers: at supplier seminars; a one-on-one “speed- networking” session; or during the sponsor showcase. And, then, offsite— it’s off to tour the local clubs! Hasta la vista! I hope to see you in Barcelona! —|
