Hiking, Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Travel Alberta Photo

Hazards and safety concerns include avalanche, high wind, sun exposure, steep slopes, uneven terrain (rocks, tree roots), ruts, wet areas, river crossings & wildlife - black bears, cougars, moose, deer, elk, wolves, grizzly bears. So come prepared and bring a camera.

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park – An excellent day hike, the route to Crypt Lake involves a water- taxi ride from the Waterton marina to the trailhead, multiple waterfalls, a steel ladder and 60-foot passageway through the mountain, a cliff traverse and an overall ascent of 2,300 feet before arriving at the beautiful alpine lake. A heads up from experience: take the earliest water taxi (9:00 a.m. in the summer months) to maximize

your trip time at Crypt Lake. Hiking is a phenomenally pure experience with great terrain, skilled guides, abundant interpretive trails, and loops that suit all skill levels. With some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world Wateron-Glacier provides a phenomenal late-season outdoor experience. Parks Canada takes excellent care of the trail systems in Waterton, many of which become cross-country and snow- shoe routes in the winter months.

• There are 255 km (191 miles) of trails to explore ranging in difficulty from a short strolls to steep treks of several days duration. Trails are provided for hikers, horse riders and bicyclists.

• Trails in Waterton also lead to extensive

trail systems in Montana's Glacier National Park, and in British Columbia's Akamina-Kishinina National Park.

Kananaskis Country - The Ribbon Creek trail is just the beginning to an excellent multi-day hike in K-Country. The trails are dotted with back-country campsites. Start out with an easy 11- kilometre jaunt to the waterfall where adventure kicks in as hikers then scale a rock wall pitted with spikes and chains. You'll find alpine meadows and lakes above as the trail continues through Guinns Pass and descends along the Galatea trail. Always make sure you purchase a back-country camping permit from the Visitor’s Centre.
