Thompson Okanagan: Forage For Fungi In
BC Wine Country Staff Writer Whether for a bit of enjoyment or to make a few extra bucks picking wild mushrooms for the seasonal mushroom buyers, there’s nothing like foraging for your own food in the wilderness. Mushroom picking on the BC Coast has been a thriving hobby and harvesting industry for decades. For the avid picker who spends the time to get to know the mushrooms – what they like and where they hang out - bliss is stumbling onto a fairy ring of young Matsutakis (Pine Mushrooms), or a massive crop of glowing Chantarelles in a coastal fern grotto.

Edible mushrooms span the colour spectrum and offer a variety of excellent textures and mouth-watering aromas. Here in the Okanangan, wild mushrooms paired with a local wine selection could be a match made in heaven. If you're into foraging for fungi, thanks to the climate - minimal rain and cooler fall temperatures - many edible mushroom species thrive in the Valley. With a fairly robust fire season this year throughout interior British Columbia, mushroom aficionados are expecting a bumper crop, especially where Morels are concerned.
