A Stop on the Way: Nelson Brewery – No Brewery is

They're doing things a little differently at the Nelson Brewing Company. And it's the courage to embrace and apply sustainability and eco-friendly process to something as traditional as brewing beer that has made the difference.
Nelson Brewery is a craft brewery located in Nelson, British Columbia, the cultural and recreational heart of the West Kootenay region. Nelson Brewing has been blowing the frothy tops off their beer since 1991. Customer favourites include the British-inspired and surprisingly chocolaty, Nelson After Dark; the rich and silky Blackheart Oatmeal Stout, which the crew notes is “so much more than a breakfast drink”, and seasonal best-seller - Faceplant Winter Ale. Early this year, the Brewery was busy developing a few new recipes that hit the market this season. Among them was Harvest Moon Organic Hemp Ale, a German kolsch-style ale complete with a Kootenay twist – an
Organic certification is a guarantee that the beer and its ingredients were produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetic engineering. In addition, the processes and any cleaning and sanitation regimes must also adhere to a strict set of organic principles to be approved by
incorporation of locally-produced hemp. In keeping with each of their offerings, all brews crafted by this family-run operation are organic, ensuring a clean, crisp flavour. Their insistence on high quality ingredients and the care taken in brewing their legendary ales, is directly responsible for their almost twenty-year success.
Why Organic? Since inception, Nelson Brewery has been dedicated to turning out all natural, traditional, full-flavoured ales. In 2006, management made the decision to transition to further organic enhancements in production and product development and, by October of that same year, were granted Certified Organic status. It was an inspired move intended to take Nelson Brewery back to the grass roots of beer production going back 6000 years. The family believes that the current practices of large-scale industrial farming with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides is an aberration of traditional farming and brewing practices.
Choosing organic production is also in keeping with the spirit of the place itself – the town of Nelson, a laid-back, progressive community located in the

the organic certification body. Being organic also signifies a commitment to environmental sustainability.
The goal at Nelson is to eventually source as many of the ingredients as locally as possible. At present, most of the barley used at the brewery is already malted here in BC, and the company is working with local farmers toward the planting of certified organic hops. All spent organic materials are recycled by local farmers as feed and compost.
