Calusa Blueway Festival Not Just for Paddlers
O
ffering much more than kayaking and canoeing, the 10-day Calusa Blueway
Paddling Festival, held from October 29-No- vember 7, includes eco-friendly events and activities for all ages. Events are held at public parks, archaeological sites, resorts, restaurants and campgrounds along the Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail, a 190-mile, marked saltwater trail that spans Southwest Florida’s coast and inland rivers.
The festival has been selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20
Events for 2010. Its two weekends offer hands-on nature experiences; kayaking and canoeing, including speakers and instruction; eco-activities for children and adults; live music; races; a catch-and-release fishing tournament; geocaching; green events; and paddlers’ get-togethers. Most events are free; some include small fees, such as a suggested donation for admission or parking. An October 30 daylong event at Lovers Key State Park includes stand-up paddle-
boarding; coastal kayaking classes and demonstrations; canoeing; paddling gear for purchase; guided, off-road cycling; bird watching; educational wading trips; and living history programs. Nearly all of the activities are free with park admission. The festival is coordinated by Lee County Parks & Recreation, with assistance
from various sites such as Lovers Key State Park, which has been featured on the Travel Channel’s “Top 10 Florida Beaches.”
