Green Searching Eco-friendly Manufacturer

Turns Trash into Cash

TerraCycle’s award-win- ning entrepreneur, Tom Szaky, is turning con-

ventional manufac- turing on its head. The company now up-cycles consumer packaging waste into 186 products, available at retailers like Whole Foods Market, Petco, Home Depot, Walmart and Target. The National Geographic Chan-

nel’s Garbage Moguls, which debuted new episodes of the TerraCycle ex- perience this summer, illustrates such transformations as cereal boxes into notebooks, newspapers into pencils, cookie wrappers into kites, and dispos- able pens into trash cans. Schools and community nonprofits collect the mate- rials for payment through eco-friendly local fundraisers.

Protecting Our Coasts and Oceans

The Blue Frontier/Pe- ter Benchley 2010 Hero of the Seas recognition was awarded to Cynthia Sar- thou, execu-

tive director of the New Orleans-based Gulf Restoration Network (HealthyGulf. org), a frontline group dealing with the environmental effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This year’s winner is just one of 2,000 groups and agen- cies working on behalf of ocean and coastline conservation. Blue Frontier’s mission is to strengthen and help unify this solution-oriented marine conserva- tion community.

“As the Gulf disaster shows, we are all dependent on the ocean for protec- tion, security and sustenance,” remarks David Helvarg, president of the Blue Frontier Campaign (BlueFront.org).
