Coasts & Waterways

With the mainland Australian and New Zealand coastlines stretching such vast distances there are huge challenges in maintaining healthy coastlines for all. Our wetlands, rivers, streams and creeks are also at risk from a range of environmental problems, including erosion, salinity, drought and pollution. Our teams help address challenges such as loss of native species, dune/bank erosion, invasive weeds, access control to sensitive areas, and water quality monitoring projects to check on the health of our waterways.

Healthy Communities

As our population continues to grow, especially in urban areas, many people feel disconnected from their natural environment as well as from the community in general. Many centres are under pressure with increasing population density and continuing urban sprawl. Our projects help engage and bring diff erent segments of the community together through targeted programs to protect, enhance and preserve natural spaces whilst simultaneously improving individual and community health and enjoyment.

Heritage

Our heritage is a legacy from our past and forms an integral part of life today in the form of the stories and places that make up our national identity. It includes, but is not limited to, natural, built and cultural locations of signifi cance which must be preserved for current and future generations. Our volunteers are involved in projects that include care and maintenance of community museums and contents, restoration of heritage gardens and maintenance and protection of local, indigenous and world heritage sites.

Disaster Relief

Natural disasters like fi res, droughts, fl oods and violent storms occur all too frequently. Man-made disasters such as oil-spills can cause signifi cant damage to our natural environment too. Conservation Volunteers has a long history of assisting in both the response and recovery phase of numerous disasters ranging from devastating bushfi res and cyclones to oil spills and whale-strandings. Our volunteers support communities and the environment as they respond to and recover from disasters. Past activities have included cleaning and feeding oil-aff ected birds; reinstating fences after major bushfi res; and restoring walking tracks after fl oods.
