What happens if I train them and they leave?

Guy Moreton, owner of More People, looks at this key question often raised by clients looking to recruit and train staff.

“What happens if I train them and they leave?” is something that I am frequently asked when I talk about our training and development business to potential clients within horticulture. Now, my heartfelt response to this statement is, ”What happens if you don’t train them and they stay?” If you think about it logically, what would you prefer: someone in your business who is motivated, confident and capable of doing the job you expect of them because they’ve been trained properly, or someone who feels insecure, de-motivated and perhaps

somewhat unloved? This will be because they feel that their employer expects a lot from them and has not invested any resources in providing them with the tools to do the job in the first place? In today’s market place we all recognise how difficult it is to source and retain good people so surely it is better to try and make your existing workforce, be they sales people, nursery workers, administrative staff or even directors, work more efficiently and effectively through a structured approach to learning and development.

We are all aware that the market is toughening up and things are likely to remain very competitive for quite some time. The training and development of your team will not be the panacea to all the pressures you are under but it can make a big impact on your bottom line by increasing your ability to remain flexible, helping to raise their level of motivation and morale as well as increasing their loyalty to the company, as employees do recognise and appreciate when they see that their company is investing in their future.

It won’t just be your employees that recognise this, but your customers also. At some point we are all customers and consumers and we all recognise when we encounter well-trained and motivated people, and how that can influence our buying decisions. So why would you expect your customers to feel any different? In today’s crowded market place you don’t only need to stand out, you need to be outstanding, and a well- trained and motivated workforce is a key factor in achieving this.
