Worcestershire. Commercial growers, retailers and media contacts alike from all over the UK and Ireland were in evidence. FloriPro Services had its full range of bedding, basket and perennial products from seed and cuttings for 2011 on display, including many new items. Staff and students from the horticulture department at Pershore College grew Syngenta’s young plants using the glasshouses at the college. Product managers gave two crop tours each day around the trials for those that wanted more in- depth information about the plants on display. There were also presentations given in the marquee over the three days regarding biological control recommendations, breeding programmes and technical growing advice.

anaging media, nutrition and soils took the theme of the recent BOPP Technical Seminar 2010, held in conjunction with the BOPP AGM. The technical seminar, which focused on growing media, soils and nutrition began with Susie Holmes of Susie Holmes Consulting setting the scene with a résumé of recent Defra funded projects, including the monitoring of peat use. One of limiting factors in reducing peat was the availability of alternatives, particularly as other markets such as renewable energy increasingly compete for feedstocks (e.g. wood chip). Jim Smith of The Scotts Company and Bill Riley of Hortifeeds discussed in depth the primary factors involved in developing growing media specifications and optimising crop nutrition, with matching growing media and crop nutrition to plant needs key to producing quality crops. Sue Hockland of Fera rounded off the day with a look at the biological alternatives to methyl bromide, such as biofumigation using mustards, biological control agents and steaming soil. Enhance plant health B

od Ayre Products is a major supplier of organic seaweed to the agricultural sector. Launched 10

years ago, its mineral-rich seaweed is sourced from its own Shetland Island waters. These waters are both clear and clean, and ensure that sustenance is provided for healthy and productive farming livestock. Bod Ayre is now increasing its promotional activities to the fruit grower and nursery stock sectors. For example, using the Sea-X Seaweed extract or Sea-feed Seaweed granules can reduce scab on apple tree production. Nurseries who

already use the brand’s organic and natural seaweed feeds also succeed in raising the level of plant nutrition. These products enhance the general health of plant material as the seaweed provides a balanced and natural blend, with excellent results. The organic and natural seaweed feeds and fertilisers supply an unbeatable level of vitamins and minerals including over 60 growth products. Plants will also have ultimate protection against likely propagation issues as the organic and natural seaweed feeds are full of anti-attack, anti-scorch and anti-frost properties.
