and the August Plant Fair, we have witnessed the continued growth of the retail plant sector in terms of current plant sales, the level of interest in unusual varieties, and the clamour for an even wider choice for 2011. The next stage for the nursery sector to address is to convince the gardening public that planting is still an option beyond July! This was a topic discussed with colleagues at John Woods Nurseries recently. Given a warm autumn period the planting options are quite strong. We somehow have to change the mindset that once the schools break up that’s it! There has been a surge in new events to cover the professional landscape sector. Three new events have now been confirmed for 2011 with the latest one from B.A.L.I. (British Association of Landscape Industries) in mid–June next year. Each event appears to have its own profile and there has indeed been a need for a comprehensive landscape event since 1996 when the previous BALI event was last held. The new Landscape Show in London (April) has an interiorscape-based flavour as it develops the biennial EFIG event into a much broader profile whilst the Landscape Juice show is a more landscape designer/architect type event. The development of all three will make very interesting reading in the coming months. As plants and trees are an integral part of landscaping, we will be sure to keep you posted. The annual Four Oaks Trade Show is upon us and we could not let this pass without marking this, the 40th event, since 1971. This truly outstanding show has stood the test of time and created a benchmark for all others plant events to aim for: see pages 9-15.
