Nasturtium At the recent Thompson & Morgan summer extravaganza of new seeds and young plants, a new world exclusive nasturtium was unveiled. The brand says that Nasturtium majus ‘Double Delight Apricot’ is one of the best double nasturtiums ever seen. The attractive plants produce beautiful double to semi-double large blooms in eye-catching, mottled apricot shades. The flowers are produced in such profusion they will virtually smother the bushy mid- green foliage, while the flower petals have a delicate, crinkled appearance giving an unusual texture. ‘Double Delight Apricot’ is easy to grow and free-flowering all summer. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s more: also new for 2011 is the arrival of Nasturtium minus ‘Banana Split’. Showing superb garden performance in the company’s trials, this eye-catching nasturtium produces masses of lovely golden flowers which sit on top of lush green foliage. The slightly ruffled blooms fade to lemon as the season progresses, whilst the lax, bushy, slightly spreading habit makes ‘Banana Split’ a must for containers as well as the front of borders where it will flower freely all summer. Spiny perennial from Hillview
illview Hardy Plants created an impressive stand at Gardeners World which included a delightful herbaceous plant, Acanthus hirsutus (subsp. Syriacus, pictured). Hillview’s Sarah Millington explains, “This is an herbaceous plant that is found in Mediterranean woods, shrublands and semi-steppe, from southern Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Israel and Jordan. It is a spiny perennial herbaceous plant with a flowering spike, up to 60cm long. The petals are white or white and green, forming a short tube which splits to form a three-lobed lip. They are ‘encased’ in showy bracts of rosy purple and green with a spiky margin and tip. The leaves are long, oblong to lanceolate, and very sharp to the touch once mature. Acanthus syriacus is a superb plant for the garden. It will grow in full sun or in shade. It flowers best in full sun but grows much larger in the shade. It is 60-80 cm tall and will get up to 120cm wide.”
