orth Raleigh Community Church is hosting an inter-faith time of meditation on the anniversary of 9/11. We asked Pastor Doug Hammack to tell us why the medita- tion is important:

The events of September 11, 2001 and two subsequent wars remind us in macro-

cosm what people around the earth experience in microcosm each day. Hurt people lash out and hurt people. It is just the way things are. It happens on a geopolitical scale; it happens in families; it happens among neighbors. Gandhi’s famous quote sums up the cycle, “An eye for an eye, and soon the whole world is blind.”

And the cycle continues until someone breaks it. It is so powerful, persistent and invasive that many feel powerless to do anything

about it. Over time, it becomes normalized in our experience; normal for religions, races and nations to attack one another; normal for a hurting husband to lash out at his wife, for a co-worker to undercut another. Without clear direction, without tools and skills to help us challenge our internal reactions, we settle into an existence of guarded, tentative and fearful relationships; of confrontation and alienation.

This state of affairs must never be normalized. Every religious and metaphysical tradition has advocated individual transformations

as the building blocks for universal, societal transformation. Every one of these tradi- tions advocates some form of meditation to help bring about that transformation.

We invite people of all faiths to participate. As we pursue internal transformation

together, we will challenge the cycle of hurt and reaction in our own lives, in our society, and ultimately in the world around us.

The meditation will be held from 3-7pm September 11 at North Raleigh Community Church, 8032 Ray Road. See ad on this page.
