www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk IN BRIEF

sta aims at cost savings Research from the BBC claims that 25,000 jobs could be under threat over the next five years as local authorities in England face having to reduce spending. And, with leisure facilities named as one of the services most at risk, the STA has been working with several ‘forward thinking’ authorities who have identified how the STA’s cost saving and innovative approach can help them. Roger Millward, the STA’s Chief Executive says; “Unfortunately the BBC’s survey has only confirmed what the industry already knew, and we have been working with many authorities who have already started to take appropriate positive action. Above all, leisure departments need to ensure their resources and costs are deployed to best effect, and for aquatic services, we have proven that this does not have to lead to a compromise on service or quality – in fact the reverse in most cases.”

demand grows for sta’s pool plant courses The level of interest in the Pool Plant Tutor Course organised by the Swimming Teachers’ Association continues to be exceptionally high, and new courses are currently being organised. Candidates attending will be accredited to deliver the STA’s updated Foundation and Level 2 Certificates in swimming pool and spa water treatment. The course is available to everyone holding the appropriate prerequisites. For details of the course go to www.sta.co.uk

AQUA BLUE’S RON STEMPFER’S DOUBLE CELEBRATION

Ron Stempfer, one of the industry’s founding fathers, celebrated not only his 75th birthday this summer but also an impressive 50 years in the UK pool industry. After his early career as a draughtsman in the RAF, 1960 saw Ron join United Filters and Engineering where he designed filtration systems for local authority pools, including that of Crystal Palace Sports Centre. In 1970 he joined Nor-Cal Engineering (now SCP) as sales manager rising to the role of sales director. Ron was deeply involved in establishing well known brand names such as Laars boilers and Arneson pool cleaners. Working alongside Lacron founder

Tony Carr, Ron was also part of the design team that developed Lacron GRP filters. In 1976 Ron set up Aqua-Blue

Designs as a specialist architectural design and engineering consultancy for all types of swimming pool, sauna, steam room and water feature projects in both the residential and commercial sectors of the wet leisure industry. An active regional chairman of

SPATA Ron was Chairman of the Standards committee that rewrote the standards in 1999. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers and has been responsible for producing many ISPE technical papers. Ron has also written about some of Aqua-Blue’s more out of the ordinary designs for trade journals. At the end of 2000 Ron, a fellow

of the Institute sold Aqua-Blue to Michael Cormacey, who also comes from a drawing office and construction industry background, but had already completed 20 years in the pool trade. The company continued to operate building up an impressive portfolio of award winning completed projects that have to date spanned 27 different countries.

£30,000 investment set to raise profile for disabled people

Fifteen disabled swimmers officially opened a suite of fully accessible facilities for disabled people at Gloucester’s GL1 Leisure Centre. The poolside facilities mark a real

investment in disabled access as the centre also launched a new programme that aims to raise the profile and abilities of young disabled swimmers. The suite of equipment allows

greater access to the swimming pools through new changing facilities and a poolside hoist. The main feature is a customised electronic ceiling lift that enables users to be transferred in a comfortable and dignified way and also eliminates manual lifting. The works, costing £30,000 were

part funded through a £10,000 Gloucestershire County Council grant through the ‘Transforming Short Breaks’ project as part of the government’s ‘Aiming High for Disabled Children’ programme. Sally Barnes, Operations Manager

said: “This is one of the first, if not the first, public facility to have all this equipment to enable severely disabled people to enter a swimming pool. “We are very excited to be able to

offer these new facilities to users of all abilities and hope it encourages and enables the use of a public swimming pool.”
