there are so many choices of finish. Mosaic tiles, different colours and textures are all options to create different effects.

NEW COST-SAVING TECHNIQUES INCLUDE UNDERWATER ‘RENDERING FIRST’
Underwater pool repair specialists UPS have devised a unique shuttering system which allows re-rendering to take place underwater. The company has also identified a product that will bond and cure underwater to ensure that the vertical wall will retain the render, which in one recent case was particularly thick at 55mm. Two of UPS’s recent contracts have highlighted more
expense-cutting
techniques – one involving this possible ‘first’ in underwater rendering and another paying close attention to the importance of correctly operating construction joints. The underwater rendering ‘first’ involved
the Riverside Leisure Centre at Chelmsford. Following a Christmas shutdown for changing room refurbishment and mechanical engineering work, it was discovered, on refilling the pools, that an area of tiling in the diving pool was found to have delaminated along with its render. The area affected was 12 square metres of a vertical wall. The pool management contacted UPS
and requested their Preventative Maintenance Condition Survey to establish a solution by which the problem could be rectified. Their aim was, if possible, to have the work carried out without having to empty the pool, thereby preventing loss of revenue and inconvenience to the pool users. This is where another possible ‘first’ for UPS was created – after all they are the company who invented the idea of underwater repair to swimming pools and have created lots of ‘firsts’ over their
quarter of a century in the business. The operation was
completed
successfully and another local authority made valuable savings. Construction joints at Pwllheli Leisure
Centre, North Wales, were UPS’s target for future cost savings, when it was discovered during the removal of old tiling from the swimming pool, in readiness for a re-tile, that there was an inherent defect within the pool tank. All the original construction joints had been screeded over, preventing the necessary expansion and contraction of the pool. As a consequence, tiles had cracked both horizontally and vertically. UPS advised their client of the problem and after due consultation were instructed to carry out all the additional work necessary to bring the pool into compliance with B.S. 5385. The work included the removal of all
defective wall render and screed where visible cracking and de-lamination had taken
place. Following correct
preparation, reinstatement of the wall render and screeding was carried out, incorporating new 2,150 polysulphide joints, unhindered and free to work as originally intended, ensuring that the new tiling stays put for many years to come and preventing unnecessary future expense.

complement a swimming area is a certain way to add drama and create a stylistic punch to a renovation. Stained concrete or special decking to surround it with patio sets, wooden buildings and new tiled finishes to pools all help to create the new look.
LineRS: These are seen by many to be a classic refurbishment service. They tend to need replacing after 10 years. Certikin has launched a nationwide on-site lining
service for domestic and commercial applications in a bid to tap into this market. Certikin North Manager, Neil Stephenson says: “Manufactured within controlled quality processes, the PVC sheeting is tested at source and meets all the required standards for tensile strength; resistance to delamination; tear strength; sheer strength; peel resistance when welded; water absorption; elongation; dimensional stability and resistance to chemicals and staining.” It offers a route to a second life to the pool for owners.
AUTomATiC PooL CoveRS: When customers want their pool to look smarter it seems the first choice. The effects of natural wear and tear on covers also helps keep refurbishment business brisk. It has become an important trend towards renovation of existing pools, both domestic and small commercial.
The boom in renovating older pools rather than building new ones has meant pool builders and suppliers have had to adapt and find new options for owners who want to see a ‘new for old ’pool. Poolsafe Fine Grade rubber flooring is one
option for refurbishing outdated pool surrounds and wet or dry leisure areas that have become unsafe or uncomfortable underfoot. The anti-slip surface is strong and functional; its finish also ensures a reduction in the amount of slip accidents that occur on wet leisure floors without slip resistant properties. Manufactured from EPDM granules with light
stable resins, to maximise UV resistance it is also possible to include within the mix a sanitising agent that yields a notable reduction in the level of harmful bacteria at foot level and adds significantly to the safety aspect of the flooring. The porous surface is pleasant to walk on and
allows splash out surface water to evaporate without pooling. Given the sound absorbing qualities of
Poolsafe’s rubber flooring, noise pollution is also vastly reduced which is particularly beneficial in commercial pool halls. Poolsafe’s FG rubber flooring offers a
