COMMERCIAL POOLS NEED A MUCH STRONGER ‘BALANCE SHEET’ WHEN IT COMES TO ENERGY SAVINGS

Swimming pool technology is heading towards helping larger pool owners and managers being able to declare a positive “balance sheet” in environmental, energy and costs. These positive environmental, energy and cost-

related effects result particularly from pumps, measuring, control and dosage systems, filters and water treatment products and pools with low energy consumption that not only significantly

reduces energy use but also CO2 emissions. Key elements for an energy ‘balance sheet’ will

include: • pumps that save on electricity, measuring, control and dosage

• systems that reduce use of water, treatment products and energy

• chlorine-free water treatment products that are thus not only easy on the skin, eyes and the environment but also odour-free.

Energy efficiency has been highlighted as one of the key areas for improvement with the brief of commercial pools to become ‘greener’. Low maintenance costs and energy efficiency through the use of heat pumps continues to be a priority at community pools throughout the UK. Heat pumps remain high on the agenda for such savings. The launch of a new generation of swimming

pool climate control systems is a special event, with arguably 14 years since the last real technological breakthrough. The Gemini system from Heatstar is a direct

response to increasing fuel prices and the escalating focus and demand for sources of renewable energy. The Gemini provides all the usual energy

efficiencies associated with a heat pump dehumidification system with heat reclaim available to both air and pool water. However, the Gemini also incorporates a built-

in fresh air source heat pump boiler, which extracts energy from the outside air and uses this to heat the pool room air and pool water directly. The combined Gemini hybrid provides the end client with an easy and convenient solution to

the desire to accommodate renewable energy technology, without the need or high associated costs of installing a ground source heat pump boiler or externally positioned air source heat pump boilers. As the Gemini air source

heat pump places the energy directly into the pool room air and pool water, it is capable of achieving much higher operating efficiencies when compared to a separate external heat pump which can only provide indirect heating via a central heating pipe circuit. To make installation as easy for the trade as possible, the installation requirements and

services for the Gemini are exactly the same as for a standard indoor pool climate control unit. Heatsavr, the bio-degradable liquid which

forms a transparent monomolecular layer over the surface of a pool, is increasingly in demand as an energy efficient option for larger pools. Many local authorities see the system as a part of their commitment to energy savings and

initiative to reduce CO2 emissions. The Heatsavr layers reduce evaporation, which

not only saves on water heating but with indoor pools can significantly reduce the cost of humidity control and air heating. An automatic dosing system ensures the correct dose of Heatsavr is added at the same time each day. For over 50 years, scientists have known a

monolayer spread across the surface of a liquid can dramatically reduce evaporation and energy loss, but until Flexible Solutions developed their patented Heatsavr, over 16 years ago, no company had been able to make a monolayer spread reliably and inexpensively or re-group effectively after the water had been disturbed. Bob White, Managing Director of Heatsaver Ltd,

the UK distributors, who first introduced the product to the UK market in 2003, is keen to point out that Heatsavr is a fully automatic cover with a difference.

“Unlike a conventional automatic cover, which

has to be removed before swimming, Heatsavr is available to do its job 24 hours a day since it works whenever the pool is sufficiently calm.” Certikin has also raised the bar with the new 29

range of Calorex pool heat pumps. Produced in Europe to ISO9001-2001 Standards, the 629 and 829 models lead the industry in both performance and efficiency. The 29 range offers proven co-efficient of

performance (COP) of up to 5:1. This means the heat pumps can provide up to five units of energy for the pool for every one unit paid for while at the same time, drastically reducing carbon emissions. spn
