ISRM, the Institute of Sport and Recreational Management, is to deliver its pool based qualifications in a new way. From 1 August onwards the pool and spa courses will be organised differently with revised and revamped ‘new look’ manuals,

and an updated

administration. The courses will be organised and promoted centrally by the institutes’ HQ, though they will continue to be delivered by an experienced and respected team of trainers across the UK. Says the Institute: “By taking course

The 10,000th Certikin gas boiler (a Genie MB35S)

rolled off the

production line at Malvern Boilers factory in Worcestershire this month. It was a time for Certikin to reflect on the Genie, that in four years has revolutionised the pool heating sector. The Genie truly has an 94%

efficiency and 30% reduction in heating costs

plaudits, least (compared to

conventional gas fired pool boilers). The Genie has received many not

from

Buckinghamshire pool retailer, Deep End Pools whose service co- ordinator, Peter Morris, says; “We are great fans of the Genie and install at least four each year. We always recommend them to our customers as they are reliable, compact, energy efficient, look good and are easily serviceable. Basically, they are everything you want in a heater!” Deep End Pools installed the 10,000th boiler for a customer in Gerrards Cross who was looking to refurbish the pool’s heating system. Malvern

somewhat challenging: The market required a compact, affordable pool heater that was easy to install, maintain and use, with low running

costs and reduced CO2 emissions. “2006 saw the pre-production

versions of the Genie C go into service. Following a series of successful field trials, production started at the beginning of 2007. It is fair to say that we were caught out by the exceptional interest in the new Genie and it took several months before production could finally match the high demand.” Nick says: “Very rarely is a product

launched that has no room for improvement and at the beginning of 2009, we launched the Genie S, a direct replacement for the C. The S model’s most significant change was the inclusion of a cupro-nickel heat exchanger, giving the new range a robustness that cannot be matched by stainless steel or copper; in addition to maximising its heat transfer characteristics.” Other developments include the

Boilers’ Managing

Director, Nick Perry, says the success is due to a programme of research and development which resulted in a unique product that filled a gap in the marketplace. “At the end of 2005 Malvern Boilers started to develop a new range of condensing, high efficiency swimming pool heaters. The project was nicknamed Genie, a name that has stuck from conception to market. The specification for the Genie range was

Genie Dual which came about as a result of Certikin’s customers requesting a Genie that could provide pool heating plus low pressure hot water

for space

heating, hot water or use with dehumidifiers.

organisation in house, as well as controlling the distribution and price, we can now improve our turnaround time for certificates from 12 weeks to 6 weeks. This is well ahead of the industry standard and we think will be well received by our customers.

ISRM TAKES POOL TRAINING ‘IN HOUSE’ “We’ve also changed the format

of some of our courses following feedback from customers, this includes the NPPO ,National Pool Plant Operators, which has reverted back to the format it was prior to February 2010 i.e. one course of three days duration that leads to the NPPO certificate,

successful

candidates will be added to the register for three years as opposed to the previous

five year

system. Associate membership of the Institute (for one year) is given automatically to all who successfully pass the NPPO.

HeaTSTar Travelling bearS Added David:

A SPATEX promotion from heat pump specialists Heatstar has ended with an around the world story of teddy bears and photographs in glamorous international locations. At the last two SPATEX exhibitions Heatstar as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations started to give away a promotional teddy bear kitted out in the company logo. “It was just part of a promotion at the show but it went really well and we ended up giving away 400 or 500 teddy bears,” said David Hayles, Heatstar’s Technical Manager. But it’s what happened next which caught the company by surprise.

“Photographs

started to come in by email of the Heatstar teddy bear from locations all over the world – Australia, China, New Zealand. It all came as a bit of a surprise but all the photographs clearly showed what part of the world they came from. It wasn’t just one person – the email addresses were from different people so there’s a bit of a theme running through this. It’s been great to see though and shows how creative people can be. It’s ended up a great promotion for us.” For more pictures of the travelling bears, visit the SPN website.
