All 250 windows at the pool have been covered with dark tinted film to stop people staring in and “protect the modesty” of swimmers. But many regulars are angry at being denied natural light at Darlaston Leisure Centre in Walsall.

houNslow FIghTs For Free swImmINg One local authority is fighting to re-introduce free swimming for the over 60s until March 2011. Hounslow Council has made the pledge after central Government axed the scheme across the country. The end of free swimming for the over 60s has come as a great disappointment to thousands of residents it says and is trying to pay for the free swimming itself. The council has pledged to try and restart the offer until it officially ends in March next year.

The campaign from the ASA is aimed at children and parents and tries to make children aware of the dangers posed by water. It is also aimed at trying to give more people confidence in water and knowing when they are safe and when there is danger. A £130,000 order from China for Glasgow based Triogen, specialists in UV and ozone systems, came at the end of a 25 strong trade visit

organised by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry. Triogen won a contract to work on the Olympic class swimming pools for the FINA championships to be held in Shanghai in 2011. Alastair Crawford from Triogen

said he was barely off the plane when the order was won. “I had just set foot in my hotel

delegation meant I could see it through in person. From a Chinese perspective that demonstrated real commitment and hopefully will lead to even more business.” The trip was the 50th year of SCDI visits to international markets.
