Jessica Tsao ’07 will play defense as a senior this fall for the University of Portland Pilots. 30 OES MAGAZINE SUMMER 2010 30
THE GRAPEVINE Attention soccer fans: Here is an update
on Jessica Tsao ’07, our University of Portland star outside fullback. Entering her senior year this fall, Jessica is a three- year starter with nine assists from her defensive position last year. In addition to several All-West Coast Conference honors in her college career, Jessica has been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Team. Last season, she helped the Portland defense to a 0.38 goals-against average and 15 shutouts, both second in the national rankings. As a team, the Pilots have reached the NCAA quarterfinals each of the last three years. At OES, Jessica’s favorite subjects were
science and French. Today, she holds a 3.98 cumulative grade point average as a biology major with a minor in French and plans on attending graduate school after her undergraduate studies. Jessica believes that the most rewarding part of playing soccer is when everyone is on the same page, everything is clicking, and the entire team is playing really well. When this happens, there is a shared atmosphere of joy and excitement. As an Aardvark, Jessica and her team-
mates won the 2005 Girls State Soccer Championship for the first time since 1994. Her memories of the OES team remind her to make sure she is having fun.
She says, “OES soccer always had a strong team spirit and we always knew how to have a good time. I look back on every- thing we accomplished and I see how it is possible to win and have fun at the same time.”
Allison Rhines ’06 has been chosen
by the Gates Cambridge Scholar program to attend Cambridge for a year to pursue an M.Phil degree. She graduated from Stanford in June with a degree with honors in human biology.
Alexandra Mason ‘07 plays
volleyball for Chicago State University and this year received NJCAA Division III All-American honors.
Alden Carrithers ’03, who was
drafted by the Detroit Tigers after playing college ball at UCLA, has been leading his single A Lakeland, Florida, league in hitting and has been moved to AA in Erie, Pennsylvania. During spring training, he had an opportunity to move up from the farm team and fill in for a few Tigers games. He was covering second base in a major league game against the Yankees when Alex Rodriguez doubled. A-Rod to Alden: “Welcome to the big leagues, deuce.”
