NEWS New Oregon Bishop Stresses Ethics and Values in Education “Religion is an

important part of the world today, and we need adults who can talk about that,” he

said. “Unless you know something about other faiths and how they

understand the world and why they act the way they do, you are at a disadvantage.”

— Bishop Michael Hanley

Bishop Hanley is a storyteller, and he

likes to use his stuffed dragon puppet, Archimedes, to

enhance his stories. Once he has settled

into his new role, he hopes to visit Lower

School classes and tell the children stories, which he says are not

biblical but have strong moral lessons.

T

he Episcopal Diocese of Oregon in April consecrated Michael Joseph Hanley as

the 10th bishop of Oregon. As bishop, he also serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Oregon Episcopal School. Bishop Hanley, born in 1954,

was rector at St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Roseville, Minnesota, before being elected as bishop by clergy and delegates at the annual Diocesan Convention in November. He says that as bishop he wants to support the work that OES is doing. He praised the unique role of Episcopal schools, as opposed to parochial schools, which seek to indoctrinate students in one faith, or public schools, where religion is rarely addressed. “An Episcopal school does not teach a person

to be an Episcopalian but to examine the role of faith in life,” he said. “It is dedicated to excellence in education and giving people a broad liberal arts education about the life we live as human

beings. At OES, students can engage in questions of faith and have conversations that would be more difficult to have at a public school.” Bishop Hanley said religion is

playing an increasing social and political role in the world, and it is important to understand it. Bishop Hanley grew up in

Oklahoma and in New York City, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1976 and a master’s of divinity from

Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, in 1981. He is married to Marla Martin Hanley, who has left her position as an associate academic dean at St. Catherine University in the Twin Cities to accompany him to Oregon. They have two adult daughters, and during a recent sabbatical Bishop Hanley and one of his daughters completed the 500- mile walking pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella, Spain.

he best thing about the fall 2008 all- school production of The Music Man was that it brought together students

and parents from all three divisions in a way they had rarely been together before. And the good news from this year’s OES auction is that it’s going to happen again! The auction, with its theme of Age of

Aquarius, drew a motley collection of hippies, mods, and Go-Go dancers, and when the time came to support the arts, they all came together to fund another musical. As usual, the auction also raised money for the AASK tutoring partnership and for faculty professional development. Next year’s musical will be The Wizard of Oz

with plenty of munchkin roles for the Lower Schoolers, a f lock of f lying monkeys for the Middle Schoolers to portray, and some classic characters to showcase Upper School talent.

Rumor has it that several family dogs are vying for the prized role of Toto. The musical will be produced at the 400-seat Performing Arts Center at the Sylvania campus of Portland Community College. Check the OES website for casting calls and ticket sales.
