David Lowell Named

Head of Lower School David Lowell enters a familiar environment as he takes the reins as head of the Lower School this summer. Before becoming admissions director in 2006,

David was assistant head of Lower School for six years and a fourth grade teacher for five years. As leader of the Lower School, he plans to

emphasize three things: Fostering a learning community where students feel safe, known, and appreciated; providing a clearly articulated educational experience that ensures the development of critical skills, concepts, and content; and challenging students with educational experiences that lead to the development of 21st century skills. “A critical component in learning is the

partnership between school and parents, developing the bridge between school and home that enables the complete development of each student,” he said. “The curriculum needs to be challenging and differentiated to reach all students, and it needs to include assessments that are authentic and feature outcomes that are measurable. At its core the program needs to take a cognitive approach to education so students are being taught how to learn, not what to think.” A graduate of Dartmouth College, David earned a

bachelor’s degree in anthropology and environmental studies. He holds a master’s degree in education from Lesley University and taught fifth grade for four years at the Bement School in Deerfield, Massachusetts, before coming to Oregon. As assistant head of the Lower School, he worked on curriculum mapping, social curriculum, and technology integration as well as math problem solving. He also was involved in hiring, supervising, and evaluating faculty. He coordinated services for children with learning differences, advised a student recess council, conducted individualized mathematics assessments, and implemented conf lict resolution and discipline procedures. He and his wife, Linda, have two daughters, who

are entering the First and Fourth Grades at OES. In his free time, he enjoys camping, hiking, canoeing and surfing.
