Joseph Owenby Joyner Weaverville – Joseph Owenby
Joyner, age 83, of 11 Hamburg Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, from a glioma brain tumor. Joe had a benign men- ingioma that was removed in April 2009. Following the surgery, he had diligently com- mitted to re- gain his active,
involved former lifestyle. Joe was born in West Asheville
on July 11, 1926, the son of the late Nina Miller Joyner and Charles Bascombe Joyner. He was also preceded in death by his grand- son, Zachery Benjamin Joyner, son of Benjamin; sister and broth- ers: Mary J. Walker, Bynum, Harry, Edeson (“Eddie”), Lewis, Marcus (“Bud”), and Charles (“Charlie”). His first wife and the mother of his children, Dorothy Sorrells Joyner, died in 1980. Joe was proud to be a descendent of Daniel Jarrett, a Bun- combe County pioneer and one of the First Families of Old Buncombe. Joe was a member of the Class of 1943 of Lee Edwards High School (now Asheville High). He was also a graduate of Asheville Biltmore Col- lege (now UNCA) and American University. After his retirement he enrolled in poetry classes at UNCA and, more recently, various classes at the College for Seniors of UNCA. A veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, Joe was present immediately after the bombing of Hiroshima. It is thought that being exposed to high levels of radiation contributed to his brain tumors. When he retired after nearly 30
years working as a public servant, he was the Special Agent in Charge, Office of Security, U.S. Department of State, Miami, Fla. He retired to Asheville in 1980 and moved to Weaverville in 1981. He was gen- erous, loving and unselfish. His spirit of giving was demonstrated by his many volunteer activities af- ter retirement. He dedicated hours volunteering in classrooms with the Buncombe County Schools, Mission Hospitals, and he served the Literacy Council of Buncombe County as a tutor in the ESL pro- gram. He also served on the Weav- erville Board of Adjustments and
was a member of the board of the Metropolitan Sewage District, never accepting any remuneration for his work. He contributed to the West Asheville Library history project. Joe was a member of Weaverville United Methodist Church, where he had served as a trustee and a Sun- day School teacher. He enjoyed gardening and was
the recipient of the Town of Weav- erville Beautification Award. He loved to walk the country roads of Weaverville, spent time with his many loved ones, feed the birds, woodworking, furniture refinishing, cooking, the Asheville Symphony, and watching his cats play. A life- long Democrat, he never avoided a lively political discussion. Reading and keeping up with current events were important parts of his life. A man of diverse interests, he wrote hundreds of poems, most of them loving depictions of his family and friends and his early years in West Asheville. He is survived by his wife of 25
years, Ann Collins Joyner; sons, Benjamin and partner Anna Thoune of Asheville and his children, Ben- jamin and Lacy of Asheville and Hot Springs, Alan Joyner and wife Mary Nesbitt and his daughters, Christina and Andrea of Arden; and stepson, John Bloodworth and his children, Tori and John Hanohano of Waimanalo, Hawaii. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Doris Sorrells of Weaverville, Anna Kate Joyner, wife of the late Marcus Joyner, of Andrews, JoAnn Joyner, wife of the late Charles Joyner, of Treadway, TN, Elisabeth Collins of Clarence, NY; and his brother-in-law, Robert Collins of Buffalo, NY. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Included as family is his lifelong friend, Joseph H. Mehaffey of Hen- dersonville. Joe cherished his family and loved his friends as he did his family. His funeral service was at 2:30 pm
on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, in Weaver- ville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Linda Kelly officiating. Burial was in West Memorial Park. The family received friends from
6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. In lieu of flowers, contributions
may be made to the Literacy Coun- cil of Buncombe County, 31 College St., B-221, Asheville, NC 28801.
