NICA NEWS UPDATE…………..by Dave Schlabach, Executive Director NICA Spirit of Co-operation

May was a busy month with an abundance of industry

meetings. A significant and positive theme that permeated the meetings and conferences was an ever increasing spirit of co-operation by all the segments of our industry. The month started with the IAFE Zone 1 and 2 Meeting in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Hosted by the Big E… Wayne McCarey and his staff showed the depth of talent and char- acter that they are famous for as the delivered a program that was long on content and short on fluff. NICA partici- pated in a workshop exploring current and emerging trends in food service. Next it was off to Springfield, Mo and The IAFE headquar-

ters. Each year members of the NICA Executive Committee are treated to the hospitality of Jim Tucker and the IAFE staff. The time together is spent learning more about what each of the organizations are working on and exploring how we can work together to strengthen our industry. I will do a bit of editorializing here and say that in my opinion the fair industry is blessed to have the caliber of staff we have at the IAFE. Educated, knowledgeable, experienced, pro- fessional…yes all that and more. Throw in a healthy dose of wisdom and good ole Midwest charm and you have just described the crew at the IAFE. At NICA we work hard at making a positive impact on this industry we all care about but the fact of the matter is without the open attitude and spirit of co-operation displayed by the IAFE the task would

Federation Membership

Federation Membership Committee Chairman, Dawn Rowe is asking for your help!

The Federation serves as a great networking tool for Associate members and Fairs. The Membership Committee is asking each Fair to get your vendors and entertainers involved in the Federation. It is great visibility for them and a great resource for Fairs.

Joining the Federation is now easier than ever with our new on- line membership dues payment—just encourage your vendors and entertainers to go to our website at w and join under the Membership tab.

be much more challenging. Hats off the leadership and staff of the IAFE they ‗get it.‘ On we go the Florida Federation of Fairs Convention in

Daytona Beach Florida. This is always a well attended event and Executive Director, Lisa Hinton nailed it again. There was so much going on it was sometimes difficult to decide what workshops to attend. This year NICA teamed up with the IAFE and the Florida Fed to bring in Rey O‘Day Executive Manager of NICA West to present her IAFE Insti- tute accredited course ―Principles of Food & Beverage.‖ Rey is a special person with an unequaled knowledge and experience in the concession business. That background coupled with her matter of fact delivery of the material leaves everyone walking out of the session with the feeling they had just be in he presents of someone who under- stands both the big picture but doesn‘t miss the details. As I am writing this I am on a plane heading for Chicago

for another meeting and I am sitting here thinking about the way our industry has changed. For years we have been fragmented still finding ways to function together to pro- duce ‗the event.‘ Now however the cooperation that is dis- played throughout the year is phenomenal. NICA, IAFE, OABA, WFA, SLA as well as State and local organizations all seem to acknowledge and understand we stand taller and stronger when we stand together.
