Contest rules and information for the 2010 Agricultural Awards (sponsored by John Deere), Hall of Honor Communications Awards (sponsored by K&K Insurance), and the Competitive Ex- hibits Awards (sponsored by North American Midway Entertain- ment) are now available! We encourage every fair member to review the contest rules and plan now to submit entries in each contest. As you finish up or begin your fair, please keep the cate- gories in mind.

Lorie Stinson, Exhibits and Special Events Manager, at

the South Florida Fair and Exposition Center and Thom Giordano, Marketing Director for the Volusia County Fair & EXPO Center both received their CFE's at the IAFE Spring Manager's Conference in Richmond, VA on April 19th. 12 were honored at this year's ceremony. There are now 226 active Certified Fair Executives in the United States and Canada.

Notes from Richmond…150 years later— Yet the battle rages on

Success is the result of a unique set of social, economic and politi-

cal conditions. The very conditions that lead to success will be the cause for failure if we do not adapt to change. As appropriate in today‘s marketplace as it was during the Civil War. What are we up against now? Predominantly a post-industrial

society. We must compete in a ―sea‖ of entertainment and activity options. There‘s the fragmented media. Plus, we‘re only one of many looking for political and community support. As our whole society is fundamentally challenged with war, terror-

ism, and global issues, there is a large segment whose measured response is to shopping and partying. They‘re constructing their own fantasy world; a bubble to seal themselves off from the trauma of our times. We‘ve created technology and now we‘ve become ―it‖ – the inter-

net, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter… What are we becoming? Real relationships are being substituted

for fantasy – and we all know fantasy trumps reality. There‘s a loss of empathy, interpersonal communication and social skills. It‘s now a society of disconnects. There‘s been a loss of ―community.‖ There‘s been a collapse of language. There‘s been a demise of ―characters.‖ We may love this technology…but we still crave the experience. How does this apply to the top 10 ―Brands‖ today? Those being… 1 Google; 2 Apple; 3 Nike; 4 Target; 5 Starbucks; 6 BMW; 7

Nintendo; 8 Whole Foods Market; 9 Disney; 10 Coca-Cola. FUN: Nintendo, Disney, BMW; FOOD:

S t a r b u c k ‘ s ,

Whole Foods, Coca-Cola; ENTERTAINMENT: Google, Apple, Nike It still comes down to Fun, Food and Entertainment. To maximize your Fair‘s ―extreme‖ relevance… 1 Build on your

unique traditions; 2 Focus on your offerings; 3 Target your commu- nications. The Fair is the ultimate reality experience. Appreciate your history

and be proud. Understand your Fair‘s uniqueness. Identify your targets and focus on them. Then go out and seek new opportuni- ties and deliver.

- The above is a compilation of notes taken at the IAFE

Spring Management Conference in Richmond, VA back in April by Thom Giordano, CFE Marketing Director, Volusia County Fair & Youth Show. The presenter was Jerry Bouma of Toma & Bouma Management Consultants.
