2010 FESTIVAL GUIDE

PRE-FESTIVAL PLAYLIST

01 ‘URAQT’ M.I.A

05-08 August Eastnoor Castle Deer Park, Herefordshire THE BIG CHILL FESTIVAL

he Big Chill deems itself not just a festival, but “a way of life”. If they are our rule book, then who are the prophets? Coming from the Big Chill home of Bristol, the Big Chill cartel have curated a festival for us in deepest Herefordshire that gives us pilgrims of musical enlightenment yet another chance to flourish our summer with the greatest sounds put together. The leaders whose testament we must follow this year are an inspired line up of, amongst others, Massive Attack, the enigmatic Thom Yorke and the ever unpredictable, but inspiring M.I.A. Living up to its name, the festival also takes things down apace with a swathe of soothing music and a Body & Soul area offering massages and spiritual cleansing. So readjust your chakra, ditch the tawdry cans of lager and take a sip of Mr Scruff’s Big Chill tea, a welcome addition to any shindig.

T 21-22 AUGUST Hylands Park, Chelmsford & Weston Park, nr Birmingham V FESTIVAL

housands and thousands of hopefuls freeze up the phone lines and overwhelm the servers in desperation to get a coveted couple of tickets for one of the premier league grade festivals – and V Festival is one of them. Now in its 15th year, this mass commercial outfit still retains its reputation for pulling in the big guns, and this year is no exception with the kings of last year’s festival circuit, Kings of Leon as fitting headliners along with Kasabian, a firm festival favourite. There’s always a delicate mix of the uber-pop and the underground and it’s often the acts confirmed last, in the smaller arenas that will be the real unexpected gems. Satisfaction is guaranteed with the heavyweights Paul Weller, Faithless, The Prodigy, Stereophonics and more who almost demand the ticket price by itself.
