Un-convention Factory – Macclesfield 8th May 2010
Un-convention is a series of not-for- profit grass roots music events aimed at artists, and independent music practitioners. Founded in October 2008, in Salford, around an ethos of accessibility and the sharing of knowl- edge, it is an ever-growing communi- ty, expanding through word of mouth, and has seen events taking place across the UK, from Belfast to Oxford, as well as the Netherlands and India. This year will also see Un-convention events in Australia, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and Germany.

An invitation to join The
Earlier this year Un-convention emb- arked on its most ambitious project yet, to turn a Mill in Macclesfield into a ‘music factory’, and to record, produce and release an album in a single day. The idea, was to demystify the music industry. Un-convention Factory was predominantly focussed on engaging young creatives, and inviting them to take part in the day, allowing them to interact with the entire process, and ultimately have a say in all of the deci- sions along the way. All Un-convention events look at ways of creating oppor- tunities for artists to learn about how they can develop their careers, and do things for themselves.
Un-convention brought together established acts such as Reverend and the Makers, and The Whip, alongside
new talent such as Young Fathers and New Education, and a whole host of music gurus, from Peter Hook and Don Letts, to ex-PiL drummer Martin Atkins, and US singer Har Mar Superstar. A call out was initiated through music press, colleges, arts and community boards, schools, universities and creative net- works to invite people of 14 and over to take part in the event. There was an excellent response and over 200 peo- ple were given free places at the event.
Artists and designers were invited to come up with a poster for the Un-con- vention Factory. One of the designs was selected to have 350 copies screen -printed with each of the participants given a copy, along with a CD of the album produced on the day, as a souvenir.
Un-convention Factory is followed by an event in Colombia, where interna- tional hip-hop artists will be going to the barrios to work with local groups, looking at music as a tool for social change. a
The next UK edition of Un-convention will take place in Salford on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd October 2010. More information at W:
