“My experience at Mandinga was a very positive one. I have learnt a great deal about the operations of a small arts organisation... I believe that my goals to develop my practical knowledge of arts and marketing have been achieved.”

Lesley Anne moved directly into full time employment after completing her internship placement with Mandinga as the Administrator for Rifko Arts. Mandinga are now welcoming new internship applicants as the rolling programme continues throughout 2010.

2009 was a busy year for this small not-for-profit organisation with many high profile projects taking place. In May 2009 Mandinga Arts was chosen as one of just five companies to create a procession for the opening ceremony of the UK Centre for Carnival Arts in Luton (www.carnivalarts.org.uk). For the commission Mandinga was asked to produce a float with a carnival queen, musicians and performers to represent one of the five sections of the progression. Mandinga Arts

proposed ‘PachaMama’, which represented the South American Section of the UKCCA Launch procession.

Commissioned by the British Museum in November 2009 Mandinga produced the procession for the Day of The Dead Festival which took place inside the museum itself and saw a parade of lively fluorescent skeletons and Mexican musicians process through the galleries to the Great Court. Over 31,000 people visited the museum on the day.

At the end of 2009 Mandinga braved the cold travelling North for the first time, participating in the Newcastle Winter Carnival on New Year’s Eve. Forty members of the Newcastle community volunteered to join Mandinga on parade following a series of dance workshops and were dressed in full Mandinga costume for the event.

If you missed out on watching Mandinga’s events in 2009, there are plenty of places you can catch them

this year! 2010 is equally as busy for the company with lots of projects coming up in both the UK and abroad.

Firstly Mandinga Arts will take the Tongilang Chinese Dragon to Leicestershire in late June for the Picnic in the Park Festival, as well as delivering Master workshops. In July, Mandinga are down in the South West at Weymouth Carnival, and then in September taking part in the Night of the Festivals Parade in Nottingham. And as usual, Mandinga will be taking part in plenty of London festivals – see them perform at Waterloo Carnival on the 16th July and parading their newly created costumes at the Thames Festival on Sunday 12th September.a
