to name just a few of these obstacles.
Volunteering is freely given, but not cost free – it needs and deserves targeted support from all stakeholders – volunteer organisations, government at all levels, businesses and an enabling policy environment including a volunteering infrastructure.
2011 will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UN International Year of Volunteers (IYV). IYV 2001 demonstrated that high-level public attention for volunteers and their contribution to society leads to governments and other stakeholders committing to joint action.
While the EU has increasingly paid attention to volunteering in all its forms over recent years, they are still far from a comprehensive strategy and action at the European level to promote, recognise, facilitate and support volunteering in order to realise its full potential.

Rabbit
According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit, which begins on February 3, 2011 and ends on January 22, 2012. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. The Rabbit is a lucky sign – hence the rabbit’s foot (not lucky for the rabbit!).
People born in the Year of the Rabbit are reasonably friendly individuals who enjoy the company of a group of good friends but would rather work behind-the-scenes instead of being the centre of attention in any situation. They are good teachers, counsellors and communicators, but also need their own space.
2011 is the year of the Metal Rabbit. Metal gives Rabbits a more resilient demeanor than the other more quiet Rabbit. These Rabbits are very ambitious and can be quite crafty in their dealings with others. They throw themselves and their emotions into everything they do. Their determination can affect their
work as well, whether through personal relationships with colleagues or with the work itself, a Rabbit can be known to immerse himself in his projects…business and personal. Rabbits make great painters or musicians due to their sense of beauty and their love of creativity. They are also suggested as being good writers, actors and fashion designers.
Chemistry
The International Year of Chemistry 2011 (IYC 2011) is a worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. Under the unifying theme “Chemistry—our life, our future,” IYC 2011 will offer a range of interactive, entertaining, and educational activities for all ages. The Year of Chemistry is intended to reach across the globe, with opportunities for public participation at the local, regional, and national level.
The goals of IYC2011 are to increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs, to encourage interest in chemistry among young people, and to generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry. The year 2011 will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Madame Marie Curie—an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to science. The year will also be the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies, providing a chance to highlight the benefits of international scientific collaboration.

Electric Car
As fuel prices rise, consumers are looking to purchase alternative modes of transport which give them better value for money.
With the news that London is to get an electric car boost next year when thousands of re-charge points are installed as part of a drive to “de- carbonise transport”, as the government puts it, it looks like the electric car is set to recharge our transport industry.
Three areas of the UK – London, Milton Keynes and the North East – are getting first dibs at the Plugged- In Places scheme at a cost of £30M, with other towns and cities to follow.
In a linked move, the government is also to subsidise the cost of buying electric cars with up to £5,000 thrown the way of buyers, or about a quarter of the cost of a Nissan LEAF. Electric cars are already exempt from the Congestion Charge.
