FEATURE Festivals


Festival season is upon us and we thought we might share some highlights of the season for our readers. But before you start altering your annual leave to accommodate this fun filled events list, we thought we would mention that this is most definitely not a definitive list! Please feel free to add to it in future editions of mailout, all contributions welcome.


BASS FESTIVAL Throughout June Taking place for the fifth consecutive year, BASS Festival is the UK’s only month-long celebration of Black music and art. This year’s programme will see a range of music and arts events in venues across Birmingham. The 2010 theme is DNA, looking at both personal DNA and the heritage of music.

CRAFT FESTIVAL SCOTLAND Throughout June –October The festival includes over 50 events around the country promoting the diversity and skill of professional craft and craft makers and features textiles, glass, ceramics, jewellery, metalwork and millinery. The festival champions traditional craft disciplines and established techniques alongside radical crafts and new approaches. Originally advertised as covering May and June the programme of events has extended over the summer.

UPFEST (THE URBAN PAINT FESTIVAL) 5-6 June Upfest ‘10 will be held at the Tobacco Factory, Bristol. Nearly 200 artists will paint live at the free event, which will also feature two stages of live urban music. As with all Upfest events, the audience is also given a unique opportunity to interact with artists as they paint large-scale pieces.

3 WISHES FAERY FEST 18-20 June A new age arts and crafts affair with lots of fantasy themed activity, at Colliford Lake Park, Bodmin Moor.

BEAT-HERDER 2-4 July Three more days of beats and barminess. Art and music battle it out in a field in Lancashire.

LIVERPOOL ARABIC ARTS FESTIVAL 2-11 July Experience a packed ten days of Arabic music, dance, literature, film, food and culture, for all the family at venues across the city including the Bluecoat, FACT, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and National Museums Liverpool.

ST. HELENS FESTIVAL 3-4 July The two-day event will be bursting with fun and activities for everyone. In the Creative St.Helens area you can enjoy generous helpings of musical, artistic and theatrical talent including a visual art exhibition, dance groups, music groups, poetry, theatre, street entertainers, Music Network, Dance, urban arts and more.

LATITUDE 15-18 July A leading festival at Henham Park Estate, Suffolk. This year sees yet another fantastic opportunity to combine music, art, dance and poetry.

WOMAD FESTIVAL 23 – 25 July WOMAD festival returns this summer with another exciting and diverse line-up of world artists. Headlining this year’s festival is Salif Keita, the world-famous Drummers of Burundi and indigenous Australian superstar Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. Also joining this year’s line-up are the extraordinary Congolese street musicians Staff Benda Bilili, Jamaican star (and Massive Attack collaborator) Horace Andy with reggae group Dub Asante, Australian/Anglo institution Rolf Harris and his band and the glorious talent of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.


The Drum and Dance Tent will make a welcome return with favourites such as early-bird yoga sessions and salsa lessons


on offer. And for those who fancy a luxurious moment to themselves go to the WOMAD spa, complete with treatments, spa pools, great showers and a cocktail bar.

MANCHESTER JAZZ FESTIVAL 23-31 July Highlights this year will include Gwilym Simcock/Mike Walker/Steve Swallow/Adam Nussbaum, Phil Bancroft’s “Home – as Small as the World”, Stu Brown’s Raymond Scott Project, a live broadcast of BBC Radio 3’s Jazz on 3, a jazz film season at The Printworks, a young bands showcase series in collaboration with Wigan International Jazz Festival, plenty of free gigs in St Ann’s Square and at the Festival Pavilion in Albert Square, as well as gigs at Band on the Wall, and Bridgewater Hall.

PORT ELIOT FESTIVAL 23-25 July A literary festival with a selection of interesting activities to occupy the weekend.

ENDORSE IT IN DORSET 6-8 August A small family arts festival with comedy, spoken word and music. Hosted at Cranborne Chase, Dorset.

VINTAGE AT GOODWOOD 13-15 August A new festival bringing together fashion, music and art, celebrating creative British talent from the 40’s to the 80’s.

SHAMBALA 27-30 August Based at a secret location in Northamptonshire, follow the bright colours, the fancy dress, the trapeze, check out the art installations and wind your way through the craft village.
