How can I become a Groundsman?

I’m beginning to lose count of the number of mes I have been asked this queson over the last few months, which is good news as it shows a healthy interest by (mostly) young people in pursuing groundsmanship as a career.

As usual, if I want to find the answer to a parcular grounds care related queson, I turn to you, the experts and, from your responses, it seems that many of our members who are now professional groundstaff have followed a similar career route.

Some people know early on that working in

a sports related, land-based environment is exactly what they want to do; others are not so sure but would like to try it out before making a career decision. If you haven’t made up your mind, the best

way to find out more seems to be to try and get involved with a local sports club, even as an unpaid volunteer. It doesn’t maer whether it is a small community club or a much bigger amateur or professional organisaon - who is going to turn down an extra pair of hands? That’s what Jon Lawrence did - you can read

his story elsewhere in this supplement. On the other hand, if you are already sure

that the groundsman role is for you, contact your local clubs and sports organisaons to see

if they have any vacancies. And, that’s exactly what Chris Lane did: and, again further in this supplement, you can read about how he is fulfilling his dream as an apprence groundsman with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, and what his boss, Wayne Lumbard, thinks about him! Wherever you are in your career, obtaining

and maintaining your skills is vital – even more so now that employers and insurers are demanding evidence of your ability to operate machinery and equipment to the highest standards of health and safety pracce. At Pitchcare Training, we are ready to help

and will always do our best to idenfy the right course for you, at the most convenient locaon, and at the fairest price.
