Maryland is cock-a-hoop about its findings!

IT’S official, Viagra can enhance performance. No, not that sort, but that of sportsmen - and women! Viagra, or sildenafil citrate, was originally devised to treat pulmonary hypertension, or high blood pressure, in arteries of the lungs. The drug works by suppressing an enzyme that controls blood flow, allowing the vessels to relax and widen. The same mechanism facilitates blood flow into the ‘nether regions’ of impotent men. In the case of athletes, increased cardiac output and more efficient

Doctor Kenneth Rundell, Director of the Human Performance Laboratory of Maryland University, led the research. “Basically, it allows you to compete with a sea level, or near-sea level, aerobic capacity at altitude,” he said.

At this point, there is no evidence of widespread use of Viagra by elite athletes because the drug is not prohibited and, therefore, not screened for, so there is no way to know precisely how popular it is.

Through the decades, athletes have tried everything

Mind you, it shouldn’t be too difficult to spot in athletics shorts. And it would be perfect for pole vaulters!

Charlton’s athletics upset Welsh council

A community council has called foul on an advert showing Sir Bobby Charlton walking a dog on playing fields.

Councillors at Y Ferwig near Cardigan in Ceredigion, said the advert - for drinking yogurt Actimel - encouraged dog walking in areas used by children.

The Advertising Standards Authority said they checked and the ad did not condone bad behaviour.

The advert shows Sir Bobby Charlton taking a dog for a walk across a playing field. He stops to retrieve a ball for a group of children who are playing football. Then he takes aim and fires the ball back to the open goal, and is meant to show that, despite his advancing years, he is in good physical shape. Y Ferwig councillors however felt it was

“irresponsible” to show him walking the dog on the playing field at all. “We wrote

to the advertising standards because there is such a problem with dog fouling on playing fields,” said council clerk Brian Gooch. “We did not want the advert banned, but the first few minutes could be cut off so that the dog is not shown at all,” he added. “We wanted to attract attention to the problem.” A spokesman for Danone said “Our advertisement for Actimel shows children enjoying a healthy outdoor pursuit, as well as Sir Bobby Charlton’s continued fitness, and in no way condones irresponsible dog ownership.”
