Alabama Vocal Association

A New Beginning? Paul Edmondson, President, AVA

Yes, indeed! Even though my career in music education has spanned twenty-seven years, I am, in essence, starting over. As you probably know, my (former) school, Emma Sansom, along with Gadsden High and Litchfield High, have consolidated into one - Gadsden City High School. What a challenge it will be to teach students who have never been exposed to choral music education alongside those who have participated in all AVA / AMEA events. We have just completed our move to Gadsden City High School. It was quite an undertaking, moving three schools into one, but what a reward! We look forward to having you visit our campus, as we will be hosting some AVAand ABA events.

With this upcoming school year, we, as an organization, will also be greeted with change. At Summer Board this year Cathy Shelton (Hoover HS), our new AVA Webmaster, gave a wonderful presentation on our website, alavocal.org.

The AVA Fall Workshop will be held September 8th and 9th at Mountain Brook Baptist Church in Birmingham. A special note of appreciation goes to Ken Berg and the staff at MBBC for always being such gracious hosts. This year's theme will be "Caught in the Web" and will center on our new website. Cathy Shelton will be presenting some train- ing sessions on using the site. Our guest clinicians will be Dr. Steven Curtis (HS SATB) and Julian Ackerley (MS Mixed) who will present their programs for All-State. Performances at this year's workshop will be choirs from Shades Valley HS, Hewitt-Trussville HS, Oxford MS, Oak Mountain MS, and Homewood MS.

This website will be filled with valuable

information - dates, forms, All-State lists and clinicians - everything imaginable! Thanks again Cathy for the hard work! While you're on the web, try out the AMEA web- site also. It's great that we have such tremendous resources at our fingertips.

Good luck as we start this new school year. If at any time I, or any other AVA Board member, can assist you, please let us know. It is the genuine desire of the Board to be a strong resource for you, providing new and fresh ideas nur- tured with experience. Remember to join MENC, check out the websites, get your forms in on time, start practicing All-State music, register for Fall Workshop, and, oh, have a great year!
