From the Vice-President...
What Is Your Passion? Pat Stegall, Vice-President
"What is your passion?" This question was posed to me by a friend a few days
ago. There are many answers I could have given…faith, family, friends, fishing…the "Four F's," but the answer that came out of my mouth was, "the future of music edu- cation." I was asked to be an observer at the June AMEA Governing Board meeting and was very impressed with the members of the board and their commitment to improving and promoting music education in our state. The sense of teamwork was phenomenal. Everything about the meeting was focused on the future.
I would like to begin my term by saying that I believe we teach the most important subject in school. I am an advo- cate for music education. I will work to promote music programs throughout the state. I want everyone to see the importance of all of Alabama's students becoming familiar
with the fine arts. I want the citizens of our state to expect great music programs in all of their schools. I want the lawmakers, school boards, administrators, faculty mem- bers, and music teachers to work to promote music educa- tion in creative and effective ways.
The future of music education depends on what you and I do as advocates. I would like to challenge you to find ways to promote your program to your local communities. Be visible at school board meetings, PTO meetings; involve administrators in your concerts and presentations. I look forward to working with the AMEA Board and membership to continue the challenge set before us. Remember, as one of my students said to me twenty-five years ago, "Together, we are strong!" Music education is my passion…What is yours?
