I immediately wrote a short script to be read by the teachers leaving stating their previous teaching position and saying that they were happy to continue to cooperate with the Rho Chapter by continuing to furnish the recordings of the All-State materials.
Some of these teachers are Franck Avril, professor of Oboe at the University of Alabama, Malcolm Crawford, professor of Bassoon at the University of Alabama, David Eisler, Assistant Dean of the School of Music and instruc- tor of Clarinet at Troy University, Randall Faust, professor of Horn at Auburn University, Mike Dunn, professor of Tuba at the University of Alabama, and Percussion seg- ments from Greg Byrne, Assistant Director of Bands and head of Percussion Studies at Auburn University, and David Waters, Assistant Director of Bands and Percussion instructor at Muscle Shoals High School.
The present faculty consists of: Karen Garrison - Piccolo and Flute at Auburn University, Jimmy Simpson, Head, Dept. of Music and instructor in Clarinet at The University of North Alabama, Ray Smith - Alto and Tenor Saxophone at Troy University, Robert Bean - Trumpet and Head, Department of Music at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Dan Drill - Trombone at the University of Alabama, Rick Good - Euphonium,
Associate Director of Bands and Low Brass instructor at Auburn University. Our new Percussion teacher is Dr. Gene Fambrough, Assistant Director of Bands and Percussion instructor at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama.
I have learned much from these teachers in listening to them for the past 30 plus years. The teaching and perform- ance on these recordings is excellent. Let me encourage you to locate the order blanks, make copies for your stu- dents, and use these excellent examples, not only for All- State preparation, but for outstanding teaching examples.
D.D. Black returned from Korea in 1957 and was appointed Director of Bands at Bellingrath and Baldwin Junior High and was Assistant Director at Lanier High School. In 1966 he was appointed Instrumental Music Specialist with the Alabama State Department of Education. During this period, he completed the AA Certification program at AUM. As Chairman of the Alabama Alliance For Arts Education Committee, he sponsored five state workshops featuring the topic of "Left Brain / Right Brain, an advocacy for the arts." that was was introduced by Dr. Paul Brandwein in Washington, D.C. The Phi Beta Mu recording project was started and continued through this period. D. D. was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 1984 for his efforts in starting and maintaining this project. He retired from the SDE in 1993.
