Eat More Broccoli
Here's another good reason to eat your broccoli: it can
fi ght H. pylori infection, potentially leading to a lowered risk of stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Patients in a study who ate broccoli sprouts every day for eight weeks had decreased H. pylori colonization and reduced markers of gastric infl ammation, likely because of the effects of sul- foraphanes. In a simultaneous study with mice, researchers found that eating broccoli was associated with reduced bac- terial colonization. Sulforaphane is a phytochemical known to have powerful antibacterial effects against H. pylori infec- tion, which is widely accepted to cause peptic (stomach) ul- cers and stomach cancer.

The second compound responsible for broccoli's cancer-
fi ghting effect, as seen in numerous other studies, is isothio- cyanates (ITCs). Also found in other cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, kale and collard greens, sulforaphanes appear to boost the body's defenses against cancer, while ITCs have been shown to trigger cancer cell death. If you haven't acquired a taste for broccoli spears, you
might enjoy broccoli sprouts. Sprouts are not only tender and tasty, they offer approximately 30 times more cancer- fi ghting ITCs and 50 times more sulforaphanes than ma- ture broccoli. Be sure to wash sprouts thoroughly as E. Coli contamination has been associated with a variety of sprouts (usually alfalfa) in the past.
