Exercise lowers risk of colon cancer

An ambitiou new study has added considerable weight to the claim that exercise can lower the risk for colon cancer. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Harvard University combined and analyzed sever- al d eesctades worth of data from past studies on how exercise af- fects colon cancer risk. They found that people who exercised thed most were 24 percent less likely to develop the disease than eads to heart disease.

Evidence shows that even a moder- at we gh reduction in obese people could save them a lifetime of health problems, especially heart disease. An imated 50 million Americ ns have he p tentially serious metabolic syn- rome, a clustering of risk factors that tho lse who exercised the least.

“What’s really compelling is that we see the association be- tween exercise and lower colon cancer risk regardless of how physical activity was measured in the studies,” says lead study aut hor Kathleen Y. Wolin, Sc.D., a cancer prevention and con- trolv expert with the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University. “That indicates that this is a robust association and gives all the more evidence that physi- cal activity is truly protective against colon cancer.” *The International Health, Racquet

Men who get active in midlife live longer

Men who start exercising when they are 50 can extend their life span by more than two years, Swedish researchers say. Their study found that exercising has the same benefi cial effect on length of life as quitting smoking in middle age.
