exercise improves cardiovascular health, and that helps the brain func- tion more efficiently and enhances its ability to learn.” About 78 percent of fourth-grade

students were in the healthy fit- ness zone for cardiovascular fitness, whereas only 20 percent of high school seniors reached the healthy fitness zone. As with the overall FITNESSGRAM data, cardiovascu- lar fitness levels declined with each passing grade. This spring students in grades

Opportunities for Canadians

The FITNESSGRAM testing pro-

gram is available in Canada and is now used by over 200 schools. A version using metric units has been requested. One advantage of using the program is to tie into the huge database of program results which have been compiled and

analyzed by the Cooper Institute since the inception of the program.
