ow many of these powerful must-do marketing methods are you employing?
Referrals
Yes, referrals count as a marketing strat- egy. But most personal trainers have no defined referral system in place. You need a specific stage in the trainer/cli- ent relationship where you consistently ask for referrals. (Hint: During reassess- ments is the perfect time.) Additionally, most fitness profes-
sionals fail to recognize and reward referrals; doing so encourages the be- haviour. Simple thank-you cards and small tokens of appreciation are not ex- pensive, and they go a long way toward building great relationships – exactly what is needed for increased referrals.
Public Speaking

with attendees can be expensive. But speaking to a networking group or civic club that has a built-in audi- ence costs only a few dollars in gas or transit tickets. All sorts of organi- zations that meet weekly are looking for free speakers to educate and en- tertain their members. They are little more than a phone call away. Selling to groups through public
speaking is an incredibly time-effi- cient activity. Doesn’t it make more sense to present to 20 people or more at one time than to just one person during a free consultation?
Blogging
Static websites are becoming increas- ingly irrelevant. Blogs are a much more powerful way to boost search en- gine rankings, and they are very inex- pensive to maintain. The Word Press blogging platform is free. Registering a
domain name and hosting a blog costs a few dollars but much less than the thousands of dollars that used to be spent on lavish websites.
Online Video
Besides blogs, video is another popu- lar internet trend. Video cameras can be purchased for as little as $100, and some provide everything needed to post them on sites like YouTube. Posting videos of current clients per- forming their exercise programs is a very powerful and inexpensive way to communicate your marketing mes- sage to prospects. FBC
