Clinic, Cooper Fitness Center and sev- en other health and wellness compa- nies is known throughout the world as the leader in the area of preventive medicine and physical fitness. A second facility is now located at
The Craig Ranch, a huge residential, commercial, recreational and medical complex in McKinney Texas. A 75,000- square-foot Cooper health and fitness complex is a centerpiece of the com- munity. In addition, The Cooper Clinic provides patients with high-quality medical evaluations patterned after its Dallas location.
Preventive medicine and the health care crisis
The cost of U.S. healthcare in 1950
was about $12 billion. In 1990 it was $700 billion, and in 2006 it was $2.2 trillion. The estimate for 2015 is $4 tril- lion or roughly $12,000 per person. It will not be possible for the U.S. health- care system to pay for this level of care and rationing will be required. Between 1968 and 1990, cardio-
vascular deaths in the U.S. decreased by 48%. This was a result of curbs on cigarette smoking, improved blood pressure control, cholesterol reduc- tion, stress management and increased physical activity. Medical treatment accounted for
33% of this reduction and lifestyle change for 67%. Much of this effect was a result of the impact of Cooper’s publications, media coverage and facil- ity programs. In 1968, about 24% of Americans
were exercisers. This increased to 59% by 1984. But by 1990, the num- ber of Americans regularly exercis- ing had dropped to 40%. Obesity levels were increasing to unprece- dented levels.
rehabilitative medicine,” he says. He was immediately challenged by
the Dallas County Medical Society. “The board thought I was going to kill people doing treadmill stress testing,” recalls Cooper. “They were trying to run me out of town.” In the early years, many doctors saw
Cooper’s work on preventive medi- cine as a threat to their businesses. He persevered because he “knew that a healthy life means a long and produc- tive life.” In time, many of Cooper’s critics became staunch supporters. Today, The Cooper Aerobics Center, home to The Cooper Institute, Cooper
How bad is it?
Just how bad are the health prob-
lems that the U.S. faces today? The fol- lowing graphs (see page 24), provided by Cooper, highlight the problems. The incidence of adult onset diabe-
tes in the U.S. is unprecedented. There are 21 million people with diabetes in America today. By 2050, it is predicted that 100 million or about one-third of the total U.S. population will have dia- betes. And by 2050, in the worst U.S. states, life expectancy will decrease to 72 years. This may be the first genera- tion in history where parents will out- live their children.
