Body control to hold or recover
balance is a foundation skill for emer- gency personnel and prevents on- the-job injury. Having fun while your body and brain work together fi gur- ing out how to coordinate balance challenges develops smarter muscles. It also relates to skilled movement, max real life strength output and avoiding harm to the body. Dynamic balance lets us adjust to ever chang- ing environments.
Anaerobic Work Capacity
Long hours fi ghting fi res and ex-
tended search and rescue missions require high levels of work capacity. Many people believe that endurance (aerobic capacity) is a key to success on the job and that an effi cient circula- tory system is valuable for performing repeated and sustained tasks and pro- tecting against heart attacks. But responding to emergency situ-
ations doesn’t require the long slow continuous pace common to marathon running. Once the energy demands increase through fast response times and adrenaline rushes in, the oxy- gen needed soon exceeds supply and the anaerobic energy system is called upon. This is your best-effort fuel tank – it supplies more rapid fuel permit- ting an intense output. But it is a small fuel tank that, without training, is quickly depleted leaving the muscles tight with lactate. Moreover, an under- trained anaerobic fuel tank does not replenish as quickly. FBC

SMART BOARD TUCK AND HOLD
Set Up: Begin in an athletic ready position, core set and feet placed shoulder-width apart on the Smart Board.
Execution: Slowly lower into a squat, and hold the position; keep both edges of the Smart Board from touching the fl oor. Pause – hold – control, and then return to start position.
