AN APPLE A DAY
If someone were to ask me what one fruit or vege-
table I would eat and recommend, I would say, “there is absolutely no such thing as one anything that everyone could take that would yield the benefits of nutrition and health.” The reality is that everyone’s metabolism is completely unique to their genetic make-up. This is not debatable and was scientifically proven long ago by nutritional science researchers like Weston Price D.D.S. Dr. Price spent over a decade traveling the world studying the dietary habits of isolated, indigenous societies compared to modern societies. His goal was to find out why the health of so many of his American patients was poor and degen- erative. In his book, Nutritional and Physical Degen- eration, Dr. Price proves that modern dietary habits (consumption of processed foods like white flour, white sugar, canned vegetables, canned fruits and canned meats) lead to rapid tooth decay, poor physi- cal health and growth and overall physical degen- eration that, if continued, would be passed on from generation to generation. This detailed a written and photographical illustration of how societies around the world from all walks of life who subsided off of their native fare had in some cases total immunity
to any dental decay/disease; degenerative diseases and had broad, proportionate faces with fully formed dental arches that were filled with straight and even teeth! The continued work done by the nutritional scientist, medical and dental doctors at the Weston A. Price Foundation is a true testament to the impor- tance of proper nutrition which is severely lacking in our modern society. Their research, combined with many other findings by researchers in anthropology and fields alike, clearly prove that as hunter gather- ers (which we all were for around 980,000 years or so, before the advent of agriculture which has only been around for approximately 10,000 years) we consumed meat, organ meats, animal blood and dairy, vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts in season. We never consumed grains. This is very interesting, con- sidering that the current day nutritional advice for all people in America is to eat X amount of fruits and vegetables a day and also grains! Societies like Inuits who lived in the unforgiving snowy tundra, who had little to no access or availability to vegetation or fruit of any kind, predominately consumed up to 95% of their caloric intake from fats and proteins. They had superb health, lived long lives, were not obese and suffered no degenerative diseases.
BAD CALORIES
If I were to choose my personal worst source of
caloric energy intake, I would have to say it would be from processed foods and refined sugars, (this includes alcohols). It is important to first under- stand that all calories from either food or liquids should be attached with nutrients (vitamins, min- erals, enzymes). When the organic matter of food is intact, meaning free from chemical alterations and hormonal manipulation, grown in proper conditions in high quality soil, animals free from physical and chemical abuse, the nutrient density of the food is high and our bodies are better able to absorb and utilize them. Without these bio- available macro and micro-nutrients, the body is put under stress to break down and metabolize these food substances. What happens is the food you are eating to provide life-giving energy is ac- tually depleting it. A simple example of this is after eating a meal and feeling like you are in a “food coma”. You should feel revitalized with energy af- ter eating food, not debilitated. A good analogy of this would be a banking transaction. High quality, nutrient rich foods would be a deposit supplying and refortifying your body with enzymes, vitamins and minerals, while refined sugars, poor qual- ity and processed foods would be a withdrawal, drawing on your own body’s reserves of enzymes, vitamins and minerals (this includes alcohol). It is obvious to see this crisis today; just look at how many people take a vitamin/mineral supplement in an attempt to sustain health. For hundreds of thousands of years, traditional societies consumed liberal amounts of fermented, lacto-fermented, pickled, cured, chemical and hormone free meats, dairy, and vegetation on a daily basis; today most people’s everyday foods consist of liberal amounts of flour, sugar, coffee, tea, alcohol, denatured dairy, meat and chemically treated produce; this resonates well to the chorus of our current society’s state of health.
