BOB MOULD & RICH MOREL
Want You To Dance the
Night Away with BLOWOFF by bill biss
Both Bob Mould and Richard Morel are known for their exceptional talents in songwriting, musicianship and remixing skills. Together the two powerhouses of music
have created a club event called BLOWOFF in which they spin an eclectic and fresh array of dance music. This event has been in numerous cities across the United States to great success including Washington D.C. Provincetown, Philadelphia, San Francisco and New York. Now it’s time to discover this unique night of entertainment as Bob Mould and Rich Morel present BLOWOFF for the first time in San Diego on April 9 at The Casbah. The word on the street is that this is worth checking out for those people not only in San Diego, but throughout Southern California who love an exciting club night. The Rage Monthly learned more from Bob and Rich about this wildly popular event.
The Rage Monthly: How would you describe your chemistry deejaying together?
Rich Morel: It’s great. We’ve been working together
now like seven or eight years. We started working to- gether on a studio project, which was the BLOWOFF record and we started doing parties in Washington D.C. as we were working on the record. The whole “BLOWOFF” thing took off from there. We’re very sympathetic musically…we have a lot of overlap of what we like. We also get along as friends so it makes it a delight to do it. Bob Mould: We’re both singer/songwriters as well
as producers so we both have got a “pop” sensibility in looking for songs that carry a meaning and a good melody. Rich goes more for the progressive house stuff and I tend to go a little bit more electro, French filter house but the different styles that we deal in are definitely complimentary.
Rage: How did you come to name it “BLOWOFF?”
BM: I was telling Rich about when I used to work
in pro wrestling and we used to write these feuds. At the end of the feud, it was called the blow-off. We’re like “that would be a totally cool a name as any for our party.”
Rage: Why did you decide to create this event?

RM: My background is in electronic and dance
music and I do remixes. So, I had a deejay set-up and Bob actually saw the deejay rig. He said, “We should do some sort of party where we deejay at it. It was also a way to meet people. I’m kind of a workaholic. I actually don’t go out that much at all. So, I ended up meeting a ton of people as a result of BLOWOFF. It was very organic and then it turned into this bigger thing. BM: Rich and I started hanging out listening to and
writing music together. I didn’t know many people in town at the time, so my impetus for getting the party started was to meet people (laughter) as much as anything!
Rage: How would you describe the tremendous following that you both have created for this night of dance music?
BM: I really think it’s because we play records we
like. We don’t put on airs. It’s a very comfortable scene. We deejay on the floor and we hang out with everybody. We sort of tapped into a community of like-minded people. People that like hearing all sorts of different things and who like a club environment that happens without the attitude. It’s really open for everybody and I think that’s been the success of it. RM: I think because it’s good quality music. We
don’t typically play a lot of music that people typically hear at the gym or at the clubs. We do the live visuals as well. We’re doing something a little different than the typical DJ nights.
Rage: What are some of your latest projects that you are working on?
BM: I just released a new single from Death of a
Paperboy called “Shoegazer Disco” with four dif- ferent remixes. And then I’m releasing “Anywhere, Anywhere” and I have some beautiful remixes for that. It’s gorgeous and that’s coming out in a month. RM: I just played Carnegie Hall in March. Every year
there’s a benefit show to raise money for lessons and instruments for underprivileged city kids. This year, about 20 artists all did The Who Songbook, which was fun. Also, I just finished my autobiography so that’s probably a year away from publishing. Between touring, writing the book and BLOWOFF… that’s pretty much kept me out of trouble for the last year and a half.
