Revitalize Your OUTDOOR SPACE

Here we are again, the time of year when the change in weather gets me thinking on how to reclaim my outdoor space after the doldrums of winter. How lucky are we? Our climate is one that allows us to actually “live” outside for most of the year. To actually have the ability to create func- tional living spaces that take full advantage of the outdoors, in essence and addition to your home sans the roof! My first and most important sug- gestion for you is to stop thinking about your yard or deck as simply a yard or deck. Use the same ap- proach as you would for any interior room—think of it as a fully functioning part of your home. Don’t limit yourself to the typical outdoor patio scenario; there are so many amazing weather-resistant options out there. Let yourself be creative with furniture, lighting, plants and features that make you want to spend time whiling away the spring and summer hours with family and friends. In one of my favorite projects, I used this pair of

loveseats as a starting point on a small deck facing each other. Typically they’re meant for indoor use but the deck they sit on is protected so there really was no reason not to use them—especially since I covered them with a resilient Sunbrella outdoor fabric which is incredibly durable and easy to maintain. The next step was to pair them with this set of aluminum drum tables; the large as a coffee table (I added a glass top for stability, can’t spill that cocktail!) and then two of the small for side tables. They are especially versatile because they are light and easy to move around and in a pinch can be used for extra seating if necessary! I then centered this unique capiz chandelier

above the coffee table for soft lighting and motion (you should hear the lovely sound it makes when the wind moves it), a grass-cloth rug for bare feet, these brightly colored pillows for “pop” and a wall of greenery (low maintenance, drought- tolerant palms) for privacy; voile’ outdoor living at its finest! What a relaxing, cozy addition for this condominium, completely livable, very intimate, a perfect place to entertain or relax. At some point later, I ran across this no-vent fire

feature, it’s an alcohol-based blend that requires no ventilation when burned. No chimney, no gas hookups and no electricity needed, what a sexy addition for a focal point during cocktails and relaxation! Summer lounging at its best!
