JOHN SILKOWSKI
SERVING IT UP AT BOURBON STREET
in San Diego almost 30 years ago and has lived here all his life. He now lives in North Park and tends bar at Bourbon Street. As he puts it, “I am the only boy and youngest of four siblings so I guess you can say I started out spoiled and have been spoiled for all my life...”If Johnny ain’t happy, ain’t NOBODY happy! Let’s find out more about “Johnny.”
The Rage Monthly: How did you discover a career in bartending?
John Silkowski: I get bored easily and after being a
security guard/bouncer for a few years in the bar scene, I needed something new and exhilarating. I always thought bartending looked fun and exciting so I decided to dabble in it and ended up really liking it.
Rage: What is one of the things that most appeals to you about your job as bartender at Bourbon Street?
JS: One of the most appealing things is the non-stop
exciting atmosphere and social aspect of bartending. There is never a dull moment at Bourbon Street. The tips are not bad either!
Rage: What would you say is your motto for work?
JS: My motto would be: “You know you thirsty! What chu want, boo?!
Rage: Every bartender with whom we’ve spoken so far has a signature drink or concoction that they have created, what is yours or one that is extremely popular there?
JS: My signature drink is definitely, my special “Straw- berry Starburst.” I lay my stardust in every drink!
Rage: When you are not working, what are some of your hobbies or things you enjoy the most?
JS: When I’m not working I love chillin’ with my man,
friends and family, resting...watching TV, cooking and eating. I’m more of a home kind of guy when I am in a relationship. OHHH! And let’s not forget about my true man! “Kitty,” my cat, he is such a good, patient listener. I wonder why...
Rage: How long have you been there at Bourbon Street?
JS: I’ve been at Bourbon Street for almost five years. Wow! I love it here. The staff is like family to me...kisses!
Rage: What is one of the craziest things to go down in your time there as a bartender?
JS: OMG! There have been so many crazy things that
have happened here...but the one that stood out the most was...LOL! Well.... I had to lay the law. Ain’t nobody going to call my attention by smacking a glass cup on the bar twice and hard talking about “I need a drink!” I will help...trust me. Let’s just all be patient, that’s all!
