MARVIN’S MANHATTAN
WITH THE NEW YORK VOICES: A WINTER POPS CONCERT
Marvin’s Manhattan has been dubbed “A musical
tour of the Big Apple!” Conductor Marvin Hamlisch brings together New York’s hottest vocal jazz quartet for a musical landscape of Manhattan. Celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year, New York Voices is the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. Like the great groups that have come before, such as Singers Unlimited and Manhattan Transfer, they have learned from the best and taken the art form to new levels. Their interests are rooted in jazz, but often Brazilian, R & B, classical and pop influences are infused with equal creativity and authenticity. Along with their extensive concert performances and recording dates, NYV also works in the field of education, giving workshops and clinics to high school and college music students.
Runs April 9 -10 at the San Diego Symphony Hall. For tickets and more information call 619.235.0804.
INTO THE WOODS
Once upon a time...there was a girl in the ashes, a
boy and a bean stock, a girl on her way to granny’s house, a maiden trapped in a tower and a baker and his wife. Each of these classic Grimm fairy tale char- acters has their own reason to go Into the Woods. As their paths cross and the story unfolds we learn what happens when they get their wish and what happens when their fairy tale ends. What comes after “and they lived happily after!?” And you better believe, it ain’t always so great. Into the Woods is Stephen Sondheim at his best—witty, clever and lyrical with hilarious one-liners and
surprisingly tender moments. The various fairytale stories meld seamlessly and these familiar characters shape into believable three-dimensional people with depth, motive and emotion. OnStage Playhouse is located in downtown Chula Vista.
Into the Woods runs April 2 – May 1 at OnStage Playhouse. For tickets and more information call 619.422.7787.

GILBERT AND SULLIVAN’S
THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE
IS A ROLLICKING GOOD TIME
by bill biss The Welk Resorts Theatre in Escondido knows
how to put on a show. Its current production of the musical comedy, The Pirates of Penzance, has all the elements for a thoroughly enjoyable night of theatre. Handsome pirates, beautiful maidens, a wonderful score by Gilbert and Sullivan and a witty, hilarious and fast-moving script all fall beautifully into place. For those who might think they are in for an outdated operetta…it couldn’t be further from the truth. Each cast member plays it over-the-top adding a comedic zest to each and every scene. Of special note is Randall Dodge as the Pirate King. His exaggerated movements and high and mighty stance, along with a beautiful baritone voice is a scene-stealer to be reckoned with. The young loves, Richard Bermudez as Frederic and Karenessa LeGear as Mabel bring just the right touch to their performances as well and the true beauty of the Gilbert and Sullivan music is in their skilled voices. Truly there is not a bad apple in this bunch thanks to the superb casting and direction by Ray Limon. Let yourself be whisked away to a musical comedy heaven
known as The Pirates of Penzance.
