Lets Get Back To Basics!

ife is full of all these different articles in todays tabloid magazines that show us how celebrities lose weight so quickly and then later articles about how they gained it all back. The truth is, losing weight quickly is easy – but it is not maintainable and the majority of people will just regain that weight back plus some. to give you facts on

So I’m here the hard

health and fitness with

no sugar coating.

Health and fitness is a

lifestyle, not just something that you choose to do after Christmas or before that holiday or special

occasion, but where to start?

for. So lets get started...

This month I am going to give you four tips that you should start implementing into your lifestyle. Two of these tips will be for physical health, and two will be for mental health. It is just as important to implement these mental tips into your lifestyle as it is the physical tips – you can’t expect to be fit and healthy if your mental state is ‘flabby’. Physical Health:

. Have breakfast every day. I know this tip is as old as the hills but it is as true today as it was over fifty years ago. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a healthy breakfast helps prevent junk food binges later in the day. Porridge or some scrambled egg on brown toast is an excellent choice! Try avoiding those big English Fry-ups please!

. Get out and about. Half an hour a day, three or four times a week is all I’m asking for. You can join a gym and make a routine or take the dog for a walk. The important thing is to follow through with this step. By elevating your activity level you will be increasing both your mental and physical stamina; burning off some extra calories whilst making your heart stronger, and improving your general mood and wellbeing. Such big results for so minimum an effort!

We all want to change so many things all at once, but we end up

completely overwhelmed and right back where we started.

Instead, you are going to do this methodically step by step. You will change a little bit each month by simply implementing a few simple tips into your current lifestyle, and before you know it, you will be achieving your goals with ease.

Now, don’t get me wrong, you will still have to put in some work and effort, but remember that the only goals really worth achieving in life should be worked

. Do not step on those scales every day! If you value your sanity then you will follow this step. The main reason for this is that people put so much pressure on themselves to see those numbers on the scales move, and it is unrealistic. They end up making drastic un-maintainable changes in their diet and training just to see a number change and end up on a junk binge ten days later. Instead, weigh yourself every two weeks. This is a healthy amount of time as any weight loss that has occurred in this time is realistic. If you find this especially hard to do then start with once a week and add an extra day in every week until you are weighing yourself every two weeks.

. Sort your attitude! With a positive attitude you can achieve anything, you will be more focused, driven and successful. As I mentioned before, you cannot achieve your goals if you are ‘flabby’ minded. Being positive about yourself and the changes you are going to make will set you up for success! This is a fact that I firmly believe in and follow. Start with a simple affirmation that you will use this month to keep yourself moving forward – this is a little motto or mantra that you will write down to remind yourself of when you feel a bit low. Some examples can include: - I feel more confident and happy being healthy! - I can get more things done and have energy to

ummer is just around the corner and there’s no time like the present to give yourself that firm kick up the bum to attain that fit and healthy body that makes you truly

happy! Let’s face it, we all want to be fit and healthy, but when push comes to shove, there’s always something that hinders our efforts! Well, not anymore. I’m going to tell you how you can get yourself fit and healthy, not just physically, but also mentally.

spare now! - I am becoming more comfortable and confident with myself!

I personally have a little quote that I refer to when I want to think about attitude, and I leave it with you to ponder over... ‘The longer I live, the more I realise the impact of attitude on life... The remarkable thing is we

have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past, we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is OUR ATTITUDE. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it.’ Charles Swindoll.

lub Deportivo Washinkai Karate of Benitachell, Javea and Lliber travelled to England on the 5th of March to take part in the British Traditional Karate National Championships. Ray Sweeney, 4th Dan, took a group of 17 students and 10 parents and won an incredible total of 37 medals; 16 of which were gold and 15, Silver.

Karate competition is divided into two parts, Kata and Kumite. Kata is an artistic presentation of a fixed series of movements, designed by the ancient Karate Masters, which demonstrate defences and counter attacks against imaginary opponents. Team Kata is where three karatekas synchronise all of their movements throughout a kata. Kumite is free fighting and the final proof of a student’s physical abilities. Washinkai Karate has an eclectic mix of 34 katas much of which are practiced especially for competi- tions. The katas are chosen from the 4 main styles of karate: Shotokan, Shito ryu, Goju ryu y Wado Ryu.

Blue Belts Adam Sweeney, Lawrence Phillips and Taylor Brown, all 11 years old, won Gold in the Under 16 Team Kata under Blue Belt division. In the same category, Kyle Cochrane, Charlie MacWhinnie y Dylan Broadhead won Silver with Pinan Sandan despite being only 10 years old and White Belts. Christian Sweeney, who reached 14 only a few weeks ago, fought in the 14 to 16 year old Brown/ Black Belt category años and in spite of competing against older fighters with higher belts, he took the Gold.

Christian Sweeney, was the most distinguished competitor of the event, winning 2 Gold Medals and one silver, one for each of the events he entered. In the Individual Kata he was narrowly beaten by Natasha Lakin who won Gold with the Kata Anan. Adam Sweeney, Taylor Brown, Nick Tullet, Mitchell Holler and Harry Lakin not only competed against

the British squads, but also had to compete against each other in the same under 16 kata group, up to Blue Belt. Incredibly, they swept the board and won the first 5 places. Adam won Gold with Seienchin y Saifa, Taylor Silver with Useishi and Seienchin and Harry Lakin bronze with Saifa and Wankan.

Nick

and Mitchell performed Wanshu, Wankan and Saifa to take the 4th and 5th place respectively. Harry, Natasha and Christian went on to win Gold in the Team Kata Under 16 Brown and Black Belt group. Daniela Waterland, who was born in Javea and now is studying in Sheffield, joined the group in London and won Silver in Adult Team Kumite and Silver in Adult Team Kata with Hari Hook and Jordan Quirk and their Wanshu kata..

The rest of the team performed exceptionally well, with Lawrence Halls, Nick Tullet and Michael Hopkinson winning Gold with Wanshu whilst Cassie Middlemiss gained the Silver in a hard fought battle with the katas Pinan Shodan and Wankan. The achievements of the students were lauded by club President, Ray Sweeney. “With the support of Benitachell council, our team of 17 competitors won 37 medals, 16 of which were Gold. Karate-do is a way of self-improvement and Competition does not serve to make us egotistical. Competition simply gives us a way to more clearly see our mind and spirit and thereby enabling us to work at improving ourselves. I am very pleased with the humility of my students and all that we have achieved in the last nine years.”

The students have trained with Ray Sweeney 4º Dan, Sarah Lakin 2º Dan and Geovanny Sanchez 2º Dan for up to eight years. Club Deportivo Wash- inkai Karate is the Municipal School of Karate of Benitachell and also trains in Lliber and Javea. The club has more than 140 students between 4 and 68 years of age. This makes the club not only the biggest in the local area, but also the biggest in the Valencian Community.
