uring the 1960’s British art schools seem to have been the main grounding for some of our most treasured music legends including John Lennon, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. The impact it had on this period is phenomenal injecting pop music with bohemian dreams that carved the path for the ideology of “rock”.

are like two inseparable lovers, they go hand in hand, inspiring each other. One can not live without the other. Many musicians are visual artists as many artists are musicians. It is no wonder that so many iconic figures throughout rock and roll history are ex- art students. The majority of the original line up for Pink Floyd were art school boys. And it doesn’t stop there, this trend can be seen in the 90’s brit pop movement with members of blur, pulp and supergrass all attending art school through to some of the more recent indie and punk bands such as the yeah yeah yeahs and razorlight.

And as an ex- art student myself I can understand

why. You see art school is a very special place, which some writers have described as “colleges for middle-class misfits.” Institutions created for the sole purpose of inspiring and allowing a complete freedom of creative thinking. A place where traditional boundaries are smashed and conventional thoughts turned upside down if not totally shattered. It makes sense that art schools were a breeding ground for these revolutionary rockers to be. And lets face it, this was in a time above any other when music held great power, it helped changed the world. A time of the sexual revolution, the invention of the contraceptive pill. Music allowed the thoughts of a younger generation to be heard. Music

gave a voice to freedom. One of John Lennon’s less famous quotes was “My role in society, or any artist’s or poet’s role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all.” The music and art of artists such as lennon was a perfect reflection of how that generation felt. And the music of this era is remembered far more easily then any paintings

created at the time.

The question is why is it that these budding artists chose music as there voice? Why not painting and sculpture? I often wonder if they knew the power music held in hitting mainstream culture or if it just all happened by accident.

message can be softened with its tune, a social statement can be disguised in it’s lyrics. And most importantly, thanks mainly to radio it can be heard by everyone. Radio Caroline, the first pirate station to play pop music and tv programs like Ready Steady Go shortly followed by Top of the Pops emerged in the early 1960’s, allowing this music to become more mainstream, bringing it into the front rooms of England. It simply could not be ignored. Music became the most obtainable form of self expression. An area where cutting edge trends can seep unknowingly into our daily lives. As Lennon said “Music is everybody’s possession.” it was far more easily obtainable than the contemporary fine art of the day. And in my opinion this is still the case. For example, I ask you this; Can you think of a new band that has come out in the last five years? Of course you can, easy! Bet you can reel off a few. Now think of a new painter or sculptor that has emerged in the last five years............see, not so easy. Unless you are an art enthusiast or even an artist yourself Contemporary art is very often out of our reach. Where as music is different. It really is everywhere. We listen to the radio, we watch music channels, you only have to turn on the t.v and it’s there even if we are not looking for it. It lurks behind so many things playing into our subconscious, in adverts, the background of the Queen Vic when you are watching Eastenders, it is everywhere.

The thing I love about music is that it reaches people. It is in my opinion, the most powerful form of art out there because of this. And thank God those art students of the 1960’s felt this too and picked up their guitars and drumsticks alongside their paint brushes. Imagine a world without the music of John Lennon. Imagine if he had only spoken through his paintings. Would we still have received those messages. Or would they have remained, hidden to most, in the depths of contemporary art galleries.
