Winner of Six Oscars Including Best Picture.

I

n this months first ever film review in the new Orbit, we look at the much- hyped film The Hurt Locker which has just won the Oscar for Best Picture. Is this yet another Oscar-winning film which you watch and wonder just what all the fuss was about?

Interestingly The Hurt Locker was up

against a major commercial success in Avatar, now the highest-grossing film of all-time. By contrast The Hurt Locker is the lowest- grossing best picture winner of all time costing just 11 million dollars.

As well as best picture, The Hurt Locker won Oscars for best director (Kathryn Bigelow), best original screenplay, sound editing, sound mixing and film editing.

The film stars Jeremy Renner, Guy Pearce

and Ralph Fiennes and is based on the personal war-time experiences of a journalist who travelled with a bomb squad.

Set in Iraq we see the conflict in the Middle East from the eyes of the soldiers. An elite bomb disposal team cruise the streets of Baghdad with the constant threat of death from incoming bombs, sharp-shooting snipers and roadside bombs.

There is absolutely no margin of error and every second spent dismantling a bomb is another second spent flirting with death. Now, as three fearless bomb experts take on the most dangerous job in Baghdad, it is only a matter of time before one of them gets sent to ‘the hurt locker’. In my (humble) opinion The Hurt Locker quite rightly has attracted huge attention and although there are some other great films released this year, I can’t argue with the award. Right from the stunning opening scene you are involved in a supreme, tense and gripping piece of drama.

So should The Hurt Locker have won the Oscar for best picture or do you think there were far better films that went unrecognised? Well you decide.

Plot Summary: “When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors” uncovers historic and previously unseen footage of the illustrious rock quartet and provides new insight into the revolutionary impact of its music and legacy.
