It’s not easy

f

or musicians in these crisis-hit times you know - what with venues closing or cancelling entertainment programmes, and people staying in and spending their money on a supermarket six pack and a couple of calls to the X Factor voting lines. Doomy, gloomy times indeed, but paradoxically that’s perhaps why Costa Blanca band Strikland is bucking the trend - and playing to packed houses wherever they go.

Strikland is the archetypal good-time band. The founding principle behind the band’s formation at the end of 2008 was to create a party atmosphere at every gig they play. Key to this is the music. – a broad spread of musical styles, but rooted in disco, funk and soul classics that get you tapping your toes and singing along. You might even be persuaded to join the conga that is an almost – traditional accompaniment to the band’s version of ‘Love train’… Since Strikland was formed it has played hundreds of gigs up and down the Costa Blanca and at a variety of venues, from music bars to open-air festivals. And, of course, more than a few weddings and parties – the natural home for a band that prides itself on energetic performance and generating that elusive ‘feel good’ factor.

Given the type of music, Strikland gigs are not the place to find extended guitar breaks or 30 minute drum solos, but don’t be deceived. All the band’s members – Shuggy on guitar, Rowdy on Bass, Nick on keyboards and Phil on drums – are seasoned professionals who cope amazingly with any style of music thrown at them. And with a set list that ranges from The Killers to Gloria Gaynor, that’s pretty critical! Not forgetting the lead singer, one Adam King, - not just a great voice but a real entertainer. Everything is played live, of course, with not a backing track in sight. And this band doesn’t take short cuts with its song choices, either – if it’s a great song, it gets played by the band whether it’s got 3 chords in

it or 30! A key part of many of the band’s songs is the vocals and all band members contribute to the harmonies.

One of the nice things about Strikland is that there

are no ‘glory boys’ – this isn’t a band with a dominant instrument ‘backed’ by the rest of the band. So you get a really balanced, integrated sound with a focus on the feel and groove of the music.

The band has developed a fantastic reputation over the past eighteen months with reviewers describing the band as ‘at the top of their game’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘fantastic’. In the early days, the only criticism levelled at the band was that it had a limited repertoire. This was an inevitable result of choosing the song quality over quantity – Strikland are determined not to fill their song lists with ‘busker’ versions of songs and spend hours fine-tuning songs until they sound bang on the money. In 2009, however, the band worked assiduously on adding songs to its repertoire and now has an extensive list covering, soul, disco, funk, modern pop and party classics. And each month more are being added.

2010 looks like being another successful year for

Strikland. Performances at the major local music festivals are pencilled in and the spreading reputation of the band means that you’ll probably see Strikland popping up at a venue near you soon. If you do, don’t miss out – as one reviewer said, Strikland is guaranteed to make the party happen and you’ll be left wanting more! www.strikland.info
