*60 Grand Prix wins on 16 different horses!
*Rode a string of National Working Hunter Champions including
“Gozzi”, “Royal Blue”, “Riot Free”, and “Circuit Breaker”
*1976 Leading Jumper Rider at Washington and New York on

“The Cardinal”. WON 7 OF 9 classes entered and was 2nd in
the other 2!
*Won the American Jumping Derby 3 times
*Won the Cleveland Grand Prix 3 times
*Won the Grand Prix at the New York National Horse Show 3
times
*In the Dortmund, Germany World Cup won the final class on

In the middle of all this, he took a 4 year sabbatical from jumpers
to do Dressage. “The opportunity presented itself and I took
advantage of it. I was doing sales and dabbling in Dressage when
Johann Hinneman let me ride a couple of top horses,” said Bernie.
“When you sit on a good one of those and feel a top Passage, it
is beyond description. It is what wet my whistle for knowledge of
flat work, the dedication of that work ethic and the reward you get
from the horse. It changed my entire approach to riding jumping

horses.”

*Short listed for the 1988 Dressage World Championship Team

and also the 1988 Olympic Games on “Azurit”
“Back in 1988 I was competing and winning on Corsair in the
Grand Prix ring, but at the same time working to qualify for the
Dressage Olympics. I was actually short listed for the Dressage Team
at the very same time I won the first Grand Prix of Santa Barbara!”
8 he finished with a bit of an astonished smile.
He will list his best horses as “3 Freaks”….Idle Dice (who he sold
to Rodney Jenkins), H.O.Sloopy (Sold to Patrick Butler to go on to
the Silver Medal in Munich Olympics with Neal Shapiro) and Jet
Run (later to become Michael Matz’s best horse).

The Cardinal, Southside, Eadenvale, Corsair, Maybe Forever,
Eastern Sunrise and Bonneville are horses that come to his mind
as he talks about other favorites. “I have been so lucky to have had
so many nice horses and great owners to support them and stand
behind me in my career. As I have had so many opportunities, I have
been pleased to pass along some “stuff ” to others.
